WOMEN STILL HAVE SHOT AT .500 SEASON

The Michigan women's basket-
ball team's fleeting chances of a
.500 Big Ten season were all but
eliminated Sunday, w h e n
Northwestern downed the Wolver-
ines, 70-63, at Crisler Arena.
The loss was the second in three
games for Michigan during Spring
Break. The Wolverines lost to
Michigan State in East Lansing, 79-
65 Friday, Feb. 19.
Michigan sandwiched a win be-
tween the defeats when it beat Wis-
consin, 86-51, Friday night at home.
Northwestern guard, Kelly Cole,
scored nine of her 19 points in the
last two minutes of the first half as
the Wildcats used an 11-0 run to
open up a 15-point halftime lead.
MICHIGAN closed to within
three points four times in the second
half. The last time came at 62-59 on
Tempie Brown's three-pointer with
just under four minutes remaining,
but could get no closer.

The Wolverines failed to score for
over three minutes with Brown
missing the front end .of two one-
and-ones.
Michigan stayed close, though
and when it was comeback time,
Brown, Michigan's leading scorer,
took over the offensive duties.
She notched all of her 14 points
in the second half, but it wasn't
enough as Northwestern avenged its
66-64 loss to the Wolverines, earlier
this year.
"WE LET a good opportunity
slip by. We don't feel good about
it," said Michigan coach Bud Van-
DeWege.
Michigan is now 12-12 overall,
5-9 in the Big Ten with four league
games remaining. With No. 1 ranked
Iowa still on the slate, the Wolver-
ines' chances for four wins and a
.500 conference finish are very slim.
They only need to win two, how-
ever, to end with an even overall
record.
The loss was especially bitter
coming just two days after Michi-
gan's finest performance of the sea-
son. The Wolverines shot 64 percent
from the field in battering Wiscon-
sin. Brown led the way with 23

Six U.S. medals in 16 days of Winter Olympics?
Seventh place in hockey? Enough with the silliness
already. Where are the real jocks?
The United States could use one by the name of
Demers in 1992.
Jacques Demers, the current head coach of the De-
troit Red Wings, probably will be bored after his
team wins its fourth straight Stanley Cup in 1991.
Wanting to go to Albertville, France, where they
speak a language close to the one he speaks, Demers
could apply to be head coach of the 1992 U.S. hockey
team.
Now there's a challenge.
AFTER WINNING the gold medal in 1980 at
Lake Placid, the U.S. team has seen as much success
as the Red Wings (formerly known as the Dead
Things) saw before Demers' arrival.
Demers could revitalize the U.S. team the way he
has recently improved the Red Wings and the way he
previously improved the St. Louis Blues.
"But wait, der's more," Demers would say.
With Demers' success as Detroit's coach over the
previous four years, Red Wing owner and pizza
mogul Tom Monaghan would be thrilled to let De-
mers and the 1992 U.S. team practice all they want at
Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
Whoops. Wrong guy. Monaghan probably would
call Demers a disgrace to the Red Wing uniform as a
result of that unseemly thick mustache across his up-
per lip.

in 1992. The Pistons will have been in Auburn Hills
for four years. The Lions will have been dead for ten.
Fully prepared by its scrimmages with the NHL
champion Red Wings, the U.S. team would travel off
to France confident of winning the gold.
THE ROUGH, checking, defensive style of the
team will not go unnoticed by Olympic spectators.
The French fans will go wild.
"Voila! Dees ees dee best ting since zee Duches-
nays at Calgary," thousands of French fans will
scream.
ABC commentator Al Michaels and his new side-
kick, former figure skating champion and analyst
Dick Button, will call the championship game
against the Soviet Union.
"What do you think about the Americans' chances,
Dick?" asks Michaels.
"Oh, Al, the Russians skate exquisitely, just
exquisitely," gushes Button. "They have the funda-
mentals down pat, and when you have the fundamen-
tals down, well, you're simply unbeatable, simply
unbeatable. Why, I remember the British pair of
Torvill and Dean-"
"Uh, thank you, Dick," interjects Michaels. "On
with the game."
AFTER TWO periods the game is tied at zero,
and the U.S. team comes out pounding the Soviets
even harder into the boards.
"Oh my," mutters Button.
"Did you notice something wrong?" asks
Michaels.
"Something so minor that it's not worth com-
menting on," answers Button.
The Americans had scored, but Button was preoc-
cupied with the scoring center's falling while shoot-
ing in the goal. "He'll lose points for that."
The chants of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" fill the arena, but
soon are drowned out by "Jacques De-mers! Jacques
De-mers!"
Checking furiously, the U.S. team holds on to
win, 1-0, and the American players would drape De-
mers in an American flag and carry him around the
ice.
Too bad he's Canadian.

much more characteristic of the
team. The Wolverines shot only 42
percent against the Spartans.
The big difference, though, was
on the free throw line where Michi-
gan State scored 25 points to
Michigan's seven.

U.S. team practice at the Joe.
Hockey-happy fans would crowd the place just to
see Demers' team practice. When the U.S. team
scrimmages against the dynasty Detroit team that
Demers built, tickets will have to be sold to fans
wanting to watch the event on a closed-circuit big
screen in the Pontiac Silverdome.
Except for when the Pope or Hulk Hogan visits,
there won't be anything going on in the Silverdome
