ARTS ,a - - - - - - - ---- - - - - --- -- -- The Michigan Doily Friday, February 19, 1988 Pagt Sunnyland Slim By Alan Paul 81 is pretty old to be playing the blues with verve and energy. Hell, to my 21-year-old bones, it seems pretty old to be alive, for God's sake.. But Sunnyland Slim, 81, and still going strong, will be at Ypsilanti's Depot Town tomorrow night for three high energy sets of rockin' pi- ano blues. You may be skeptical. I may have been too except that I saw Sunnyland Slim and his young, very tight, and very talented blues band at last June's Chicago Blues Festival. After receiving a medal from the city of Chicago for meritous service, which he proudly wore around his neck, Sunnyland and his boys took the stage and were simply the best band on a day of very good blues. Sure, his fingers have slowed down, but his band, led by guitarist Steve Freund, cooks. Cooking is nothing new to Sun- nyland Slim. He has been playing professionally since 1922 and the following year he left his home in Mississippi and settled in Memphis. He went on to play with blues per- formers from Ma Rainey to "Memphis Minnie" Douglas, and "Sonny Boy Williamson, No. 1" During the early '40s, Sunnyland settled in Chicago where he played bring k up some mean blues as was lues Festival. See him Saturday . Margitza are native Detroiters, who won the Hennessey Cognac National Jazz Search shortly after forming last year. Ann Arbor jazz/new age pianist David Flippo opens the show. He is popular with Gandy Dancer diners so he should be just fine with you as you munch down some inexpensive grub for dinner. This is the second of three concerts in this winter's Depot Town series and probably the high- the I b7 light. DAVID FLIPPO takes the stage at 7 p.m., followed by the WHITE/MAR GITZA QUINTET at flues 8:00, and THE SUNNYLAND SLIM BLUES BAND at 10:00. Call WEMU at 487-2229 for directions or more information. So, the man's itinerary reads like this: 1922 - Ma Rainey, 1942 - Muddy Waters, 1988 - Depot Town. And Slim promises a great show. "Don't worry, we'll be ready," he says. "We're going to let it all hang out." The Walter White/Rick Margitza Quartet perform before the Sunny- land Slim blues band. White and By Lisa Pollak Rockabye baby, on the treetop, She's Having a Baby is really a flop. The husband is played by the young Kevin Bacon. (Lines uttered so poorly he sounds like he's faking). And Elizabeth McGovern in a wife's role so trite - She can't cook; she complains; she' resists sex at night. Until, (who'd have guessed it?), she wants her own child; The very idea makes her husband go wild. In fantasy scenes far more stupid than clever, His yuppie existence he wishes to sever. You'd hate it as well, for his life's a clich6: (It's what we'd expect from John Hughes, anyway). The in-laws, the suburbs, the just-married blues, The train rides to work - and it all makes me snooze. If you buy this line then you've surely been had. For McGovern's announcement of motherhood pending Unfortunately isn't this movie's real ending. Instead - and embellished by pop tunes so sad - We must last though the birth of their darling young lad. Yet when the bough breaks, the cradle will fall. This movie does too. And that, John, is all.
