Although U.S. Attorney General - Edwin Meese will decide whether to approve the newspapers' request for a joint operating agreement, Free Press publisher David Lawrence took the newspaper's plight to readers in a front-page column yesterday. "I am worried. The Free Press could die," Lawrence wrote. "If the proposed joint operating agreement is not approved, the owners of the Free Press (Knight-Ridder Co.) have said they must leave newspaper publishing in Detroit...I sense the unthinkable has become the possi- ble." An even gloomier tone was struck by political columnist Hugh McDiarmid, who wrote Sunday, "...I will predict that, sometime later this year, you'll wake up to a Free Press with a big, black headline saying: 'Goodbye Detroit."' The columns by Lawrence and McDiarmid appeared 11 days after Morton Needelman, a federal admin- istrative law judge, recommended to Meese that the proposed joint operating agreement be denied. Meese, who is not bound to that recommendation, is expected to make a ruling later this year. Joint operating agreements al- ready exist between newspapers in more than 20 cities nationwide. They allow newspapers to save money by combining their advertis- ing, printing, distribution, and other business functions, while maintain- ing seperate news and editorials. The parent companies of the two Detroit newspapers sought approval for the agreement in 1986.
