The Michigan women's swim team will be faced with the difficult task of trying to defend its Big Ten championship when it travels to Indianapolis this weekend. As returning champions, the women will have a struggle on their hands. Big Ten rival Ohio State is stronger than ever. The Buckeyes captured the conference title the two years prior to Michigan's victory and will be looking to avenge the loss. Although the Wolverines beat Ohio State this year in a duel meet, head coach Jim Richardson says that doesn't matter. "(The Buckeyes) leave some of their best swimmers home (during the season). All the effort is put into the Big Tens." Ohio State is not the only problem Michigan faces this weekend. Diver Amy Hanson is out with an injured ankle and last year's Big Ten Swimmer-of-the-Year, Gwen DeMaat is recovering from mononucleosis and will swim only in the relays, provided she has the energy. The 60 individual points DeMaat earned last year will be sorely missed. "We know we're going to have to compensate for the loss," said sophomore backstroker Stephanie Liebner. Liebner, a newly eligible transfer from the University of Virginia, will help pick up the slack in the 100 and 200 backstroke, 500 freestyle, and the relays. She hopes her times in the Big Tens will qualify her for the NCAA tournament, later in the year. The Wolverines have cut down on their workouts and have concentrated more on technique for the last three weeks in hopes of qualifying swimmers for the NCAA's. DeMaat, Ann Colloton, and Jennifer Eck have already qualified. Qualifying this year will be harder than ever before as the required times are faster. Swimmers who beat the time of last year's NCAA 16th place finish, will be eligible for the NCAA's. "In all likelihood, there won't even be sixteen competitors in some events because they won't be able to beat that time," said Richardson. LOOKING FOR HONOR STUDENTS! TO JOIN BEST OF AMERICA SAY NO. Mills tallied 19 points, including two free throws that helped finally knock out the Gophers. His turnaround jumpers had heads turning. "Mills played pretty well." Frieder said. "He grabbed some big rebounds and made the big free throws. It's 'good to see him score almost twenty points." Glen Rice led the Wolverines with 25 points. Like so often this season, however, Rice vanished in the middle of the second half. He netted three points in the final 11 minutes. and was not a factor when the Wolverines needed him most. THE WIN helped the Wolverines avert another upset at the hands of the Gophers. Two years ago, the Wolverines marched into Williams Arena with a 16-0 record and a number one ranking. They lost by 10 points. In the first half, with Michigan down 13-2, they proceeded to go on a 14-3 spurt that would provide them with the nucleus of their lead all evening. As usual, it was Grant and Rice laeading the way. They accounted for 13 of the first 16 Wolverine points. After a Mills fall-away shot, the Batman and Robin duo teamed up on a steal and a Grant dunk. Later in the run, the tandem connected on an alley-oop. Minnesota then did the only thing possible to creep back into the game. They slowed down the tempo. The strategy worked as the Gophers cut the lead tohfive on a Burton jumper. Closer they could not creep though, and trailed 39-31 at the half. Loy Vaught, shown grabbing a rebound in an earlier game this season, helped Michigan defeat Minnesota last night. The Wolverines' record now stands at 10-2 in the conference, 21-4 overall.
