'r i By ADAM SCHEFTER When Michigan journeyed off to Northwestern, Michigan State, and Wisconsin, Bill Frieder warned of the dangers that were in store for the Wolverines. Yet, each time that threat was easily brushed aside. Tonight, at 8:00, Michigan makes its last road stop to one of those schools situated in the bottom of the Big Ten standings. Like the rest of the Big Ten's dregs, Min- nesota is one of those teams that Frieder is fretful about once again. "I've got the same kind of fears," said Frieder. "They are going to play very aggressive. They are going to play well against Michigan. Our biggest thing is that we are a little tired right now. I'm concerned about a letdown. If we don't go up there with the same enthusiasm and to- getherness that we've had, then an upset can happen." YEAH, YEAH, YEAH. One has to wonder what Frieder is con- } stantly worrying about with his team. In their last meeting, Michi- gan buried the Gophers, 103-71, be- hind Glen Rice's 40 points. More- over, the Wolverines are just coming off an impressive 92-72 belly bop- ping against Bobby Knight. The Wolverines didn't even miss a shot in the second half from the 17-minute mark until there was 3:19 Grant wins Big eTen honor CHICAGO (AP) - Michigan's Gary Grant was named Big Ten player of the week yesterday after he totaled 52 points, 16 assists, 13 rebounds, and eight steals in two Wolverine victories. On Thursday, Grant had 28 points, seven assists, six rebounds, five steals, and a blocked shot in Michigan's 80-67 win at Wisconsin. In Saturday's 92-72 victory against Indiana, Grant had 24 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and three steals. This is the second time this season Grant has been named the conference's player of the week. left. That was a Gary Grant miss that Loy Vaught followed up for a three-point play. "After watching them play this past weekend against Indiana, it's pretty scary to think about playing them," said Minnesota head coach Clem Haskins. "You hear so much about Grant and Rice, but they have a lot of depth and just an outstanding ball club. They have few weak- nesses." The Gophers (9-12, 3-8) are re- turning to the hardwood after a big win of their own. Saturday, Min- nesota trounced Northwestern, 82- 67. Leading the win were the two players that Michigan will most have to concern themselves with. RICHARD COFFEY, an old paratrooper in the U.S. Army, scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Coffey isn't afraid to use his wide body in the paint to fly around and bang heads with opponents. "I said from day one that I think all you writers will realize that Cof- fey is one of the finest offensive re- bounders in the game of basketball," said Haskins. "He doesn't get a lot of publicity because we don't win a lot of games. I would not want to play against Richard Coffey." Minnesota's other five-star gen- eral, Detroit DePorres' Willie Bur- ton, netted 13 points while compil- ing 10 rebounds this past Saturday. Burton was doubtful for that game due to strained ligaments in his knee. Although he has missed prac- tice this week, he will play against the Wolverines. BURTON did not start the last time these two teams met in Jan- uary, but has since moved into the starting lineup, averaging 15.5 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. One player who has moved out of the starting lineup for the Gophers is last year's Proposition 48 victim Melvin Newbern. The sophomore guard has been lazy getting back on defense and coach Haskins is doing all he can to light a fire under New- bern's seat on the bench. Starting in the backcourt will be Ray Gaffney (8.1 ppg), a good outside shooter, and Kim Zurcher (6.1 ppg). Haskins realizes that his team will have to do more than a couple of things to bring Frieder's worst nightmare to life. "For us to upset this ballclub, we will have to play a perfect game. We have to keep our turnovers under 10, shoot 50 percent, control the tempo, not give them the easy buckets, not allow them to get second and third shots, and do a good job of blocking them off the boards." Sounds like a lot. But not to Frieder. Daily Photo by JOHN MUNSON Michigan center Loy Vaught shoots over two Minnesota players in the two team's previous meeting.
