Page 8-The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, February 16, 1988 Trackster Rowand sparks Blue By KRISTIN MATTHEWS Kenneth "Red" Simmons kindled the audience's excitement last Saturday as h e enthusiastically tipped his hat to the many fans and athletes at the fifth annual Red Simmons Track Invitational held in his honor. Simmons founded the Michigan's women's track and field team in 1960 and is the only man who has been honored with both the Honorary "M" Man and "M" Woman awards. In actual competition, sophomore Mindy Rowand proved to be the celebrity of the day. She beat Eastern Michigan's star runner Donna Donakowski and qualified for the NCAA Finals in the 3,000-meter run with a winning time of 9 minutes, 22.37 seconds. Trying hard to choke down her excitement, Rowand said, " It was the best; feeling (to qualify). I took 40 seconds off my best time, but I still can't believe I really did it!" IN THE 5,000, Traci Babcock took the early lead and blew past the finish line, preceding the next closest finisher by 100 meters. Babcock won her race with a 17:38.93 clocking. The Wolverines captured several third places, including senior distance runner Cheri Sly in the 3,000 (9:43.94), sophomore Chris Tyler in the 800 (2:15.8), and sprinter Sophia Dubreil in the 300 (37.46). Dubreil also gained a fourth place for Michigan in the 60- yard hurdles (7.28). In the field events, Michigan' s Sonya Payne landed a first-place finish with a toss of 49 feet, 9 inches in the shot put. Marchiano (17 feet, 9 inches) snatched fifth and six place finishes respectively in the long jump. Sophomore Lisa DeVries took a third in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) as did senior Mary Wyckoff. The Wolverines fared well in the 500 too, as first-year student Kelli Henderson placed third (1:21.01), Hanna Dubinski fourth (1:23.15), and sophomore sprinter Elizabeth Skinner fifth (1:24.22). To round out 'a victorious day for the Wolverines, the versatile Dana Davidson earned a fourth-place finish in the pentathalon, and senior distance runner Melinda Thompson contributed a third in the Invitational Mile with a time of 4:56.46. Eighteen teams competed at the meet, with 15 of them keeping score. The Wolverines finished with 44 points behind Illinois (130 points), Eastern Michigan (107.5), Wisconsin (65), and Kent State (46). The two-mile relay squad of Rol- lie Hudson, Kraig Watkins, Neal Newman, and Matt Butler netted one of Michigan's two first-place fin- ishes with a time of 7:35.41. John Scherer continued his dominance in the 3000 meter this season, running a 8:04.96 for the team's other first. He was two seconds off of the NCAA qualifying time. Brad Bar- quist finished third in that race at 8:12.91. Michigan placed in three other events as well. Hudson was second in the 1000 meter with a time of 2:28.5. Butler finished third in the 800 meter, and his time of 1:50.64 missed qualifying for the NCAAs by only .06 seconds. Claude Tiller ran a 48.36 in the 400 meter to place fourth in that event. Eight of the Big Ten teams were represented in Iowa. Michigan head coach Jack Harvey said, "The meet was good competition. It gives us some indication of how we stack up in the Big Ten." Michigan is in seventh place out of 28 teams, but coach Dana Kempthorn feels her team needs to pull their average up a few points to assure themselves of a re- gional birth. With five meets remaining, the record-breaking performance also gives the team a shot of confidence that they will need down the stretch. "It was our best meet so far. There were very few mistakes, it was a real good team performance," Kempthorn said. "We're looking to perform like that the rest of the season." In Columbus, Ohio, the injury- ridden Michigan men's gymnastics team broke no records. They were readily beaten by Ohio State 273.80 to 259.75. Junior Tony Angelotti provided some excitement to the dismal meet, finishing first in the floor exercise with a 9.65, and second on the parallel bars with a 9.25. Ken Haller finished second on the rings, also with a 9.25. The team next travels to Tempe, Ariz., where it will play Arizona State on Saturday.
