Page 12 --The Michigan Daily--Friday, February 12, 1988 Indiana featured at last swim meet in Matt Mann By TAYLOR LINCOLN Only one Big Ten school has an all-time winning record against the men's swimming team - Indiana. The Hoosiers have been a constant nemesis to the Wolverines through the years, leading the series, 27-20. It is fitting, then, that Michigan will swim their final meet at Matt Mann Pool against Indiana, at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Michigan hosts Michigan State tonight at 7:30. "It's been very close between Michigan and Indiana the last 30 years. It's kind of ironic that we'll be closing up Matt Mann Pool against them," said coach Jon Ur- banchek. Also ironic is the fact that Indiana is the last team to beat Michigan in a dual meet. The Hoosiers defeated the Wolverines, in Bloomington, in 1984. It was Michigan's only loss in a dual meet in Urbanchek's six years as head coach. Neither MSU nor Indiana is ex- pected to give Michigan much trou- ble this weekend. But both meets should feature some good races. "There will be some good one-on- one swimming," said Urbanchek. The final event against Indiana - the 200-yard breaststroke - promises to be one of the best races of the season. It will match Michi- gan's Mike Barrowman against the Hoosiers' Sergio Lopez. Each is in his first year of NCAA competition, and each has adapted to college swimming with amazing ease. Lopez is ranked No. 1 nation- ally in the 200 breaststroke, Bar- rowman is ranked No. 2. Tardy 'M' wrestlers edge Fighting Irish Women 's swimmers face EMU z Z- cc) m GULF OF MEXICO FEBRUARY 19-28, 1988 The women's team will take to the road tonight, but they don't have far to travel. The trip will be a short one -- east on Washtenaw Avenue to Olds Pool on the EMU campus. Olds Pool is not foreign to the women's team. Over vacation, they split workouts between Matt Mann Pool and Olds. The team has exten- sively used of the pool's 50-meter fa- cility and the 10-meter diving board. The meet has the added bonus that the fast pool will provide Michigan swimmers with fast seed times for the Big Ten meet, which runs next Thursday through Saturday. "Our people don't always get to swim these events - so quality swims at EMU will put them right in the thick of things at Indianapolis," said coach Jim Richardson. -STEVE ROEDER By RICHARD EISEN Well, at least they didn't take Northwest Orient. The Michigan wrestling team's bus was late Wednesday, causing the team to arrive only twenty minutes before its match with Notre Dame, and the tardiness took its toll. Thanks to the bus, No. 14 Michigan had great difficulty beating unranked Notre Dame, 24- 16. "We all felt a little lackadaisical," said Michigan's Mike Amine. "We only had five minutes to warm up and then we had to wrestle. Normally we do a lot of exercises and then rest for an hour. Our preparation was terrible." In addition to the lack of preparation time, the Wolverines were exhausted, coming off a debilitating weekend road trip against top-ranked Iowa State and Minnesota. If you haven't already guessed, this one wasn't very pretty. "I was disappointed with the results," said Michigan coach Dale Bahr. "We won, but not by the margin we had anticipated." The luck of the Irish showed in full force Wednesday, because all the things that usually go right for Michigan went wrong. Usually, 118-pounder Willian Waters gets Michigan a quick lead, but against the Fighting Irish he lost. Waters, in order to get his weight down for the match, lost seven pounds in vigorous workouts the day before. Waters lost to Andy Rodenbaugh, 7-5. Usually, the Wolverines have a lead going into All-American John Fisher's match. This time, they were tied at three. Usually, John Fisher wrestles for the team. Against, the Irish, he didn't. Fisher could not wrestle on Wednesday because of an NCAA rule stating that a wrestler can wrestle only so many times in a 21-day period. Since Fisher wrestled in an all-star match last week, he could not wrestle last night. Usually, Michigan comes out of Fisher's match with a big lead. But because Fisher's replacement, John Moore, was pinned at 4:46, the Wolverines were down, 9-3. But from then on in, the luck of the Irish turned maize and blue. Larry Gotcher, Sam Amine, and Mike Amine all won their matches, giving the Wolverines the lead for good. Heavyweight Bob Potokar sealed the win for Michigan with a pin at 2:55 in his match.
