The Michigan Daily-Friday, January 8, 1988-Page 11 ll icers set for stretch run yWolver By DOUGLAS VOLAN Michigan and Ohio State will haul out the horses this weekend. liayoff position jockeying has begun. =With just 12 games remaining, this weekend's series at Yost Ice Arena on Friday night (7:30) and Saturday afternoon (3:00), is of great Importance to both teams. 'The teams, which split their Qtober series, are vying for position in the upcoming CCHA playoffs. "It's going to be a war both nights," said Michigan center Rpb Brown. "They're going to come into our rink and hit and skate hard." "They're a hard-working, feisty team, and they've always played ough against us," Michigan head nes, Buckeyes vie for playoff advantage coach Red Berenson added. THE WOLVERINES (13-11, 9-9 in the CCHA) are clinging to fourth place in the league, which means a first-round home playoff ice if they can maintain that position. Ohio State is also feeling the pressures of the competitive CCHA. Although the Buckeyes are 4-10 in league play and mired in eighth place, they trail the Wolverines by just six points. "This weekend is critical for us," said Ohio State head coach Jerry Welsh. "(Two wins) would put us in an entirely different position. With four points, we'd be back in the hunt for the top four." The Buckeyes, however, have a difficult task in front of them. Besides not having won a single game on the road all year, Ohio State will be running up against a Michigan team that has won six of its last eight games. IN ADDITION, the Buckeyes are plagued with problems in all phases of their game. Their anemic offense has scored just 67 goals all season, dead last in the CCHA. Defensively, they're not much better. The Buckeyes have surrendered 96 goals, second highest in the league. This is particularly disconcerting for Welsh, who felt that defense was going to be the strong point of his team. "We expected (the defense) to be better," said Welsh. "We have to eliminate some of our defensive lapses because we are capable of making glaring defensive mistakes which have hurt us in the last month." Goaltending was also supposed to be a strength for Ohio State. The combination of Todd Fanning and Roger Beedon was considered one of the league's best at the start of the season. Time, however, has proved differently. Beedon is giving up over five goals a game, and Fanning has failed to live up to expectations with his 4.37 goals against average. Despite their shortcomings, Ohio State remains a concern for Berenson. "Over time, we've had some real close games with them, so we know we'll have our hands full," he said. The Wolverines will also have to overcome several key injuries. Senior co-captains Brad McCaughey and Joe Lockwood are both out. McCaughey is suffering from a sprained right knee, and Lockwood has tendinitis in his right ankle. "Everybody will have to pick up a little bit of slack," said Berenson. "We have the depth (at the wings) and now it's up to the guys who are getting an opportunity to play on a more regular basis." Lockwood ... out with tendinitis mss'%.
