Hockey vs. Ohio State Friday (7:30) and Saturday (3:00), Yost Ice Arena SPORTS Men's Swimming vs. Eastern Michigan Tonight, 7:30 p.m. Matt Mann Pool The Michigan Daily Friday, January 8, 1988 Page 10 Marching mightily M' looks for twelfth straight By SCOTT SHAFFER .In the face of adversity, the Michigan basketball team just keeps rolling along, piling up the wins. The Wolverines, 12-1, will try for their twelfth consecutive victory against Minnesota tomorrow night .at Crisler Arena. It will be Michigan's Big Ten home opener and its second game without first-year guards Sean Higgins and Demetrius Calip, who were ruled academically ineligible. The team, however, is getting no sympathy from the Golden Gophers. "It's unfortunate that they lost the two players, but this is a great ball club. They've got another nine or ten players that are going to be tough to beat," said head coach Clem Haskins. EVEN MICHIGAN coach Bill Frieder believes there will be no lingering effects on the rest of the club. "They know we're going to miss Sean, but this is not going to be the last time that type of thing hap- pens. You have to go on, work harder and surge for- ward," he said. In preparing for the big surge, Frieder has mapped out his game plan. "We can't allow Minnesota to control the tempo or take the shots they like because they are a fine shooting team. We have to extend them beyond what their natural range is," he said. The Gophers are shooting 50.6% from the field and average 78.4 points a game. They are shooting 44.7 from three-point range, second in the Big Ten. Minnesota, 6-4 before last night's game with Illi- nois, is in the unenviable position of beginning con- ference play against two of the best teams in the league. "First you get run over by a Mack truck, then here comes a freight train to finish the job," said Haskins, now in his second year at Minnesota. THE WOLVERINES should be wary of Melvin Newbern, the Gophers' leading scorer. The 6-4 sopho- more guard is averaging 14.1 ppg. Newbern is joined in the backcourt by Kim Zurcher (7.9 ppg). 6-7 Willie Burton is second on the Gophers in scor- ing (10.1 ppg) but his status is clouded by an ankle injury. Should he be unable to start, he will be replaced by Tim Hanson. Richard Coffey, the team leader in rebounds (8.3 per game) and the third-leading scorer (9.7 ppg) is the other starting forward and Jim Shikenjanski (8.2 ppg) starts at center. Leading the Michigan charge will be Gary Grant, fresh off a 31-point performance in the win over Northwestern on Wednesday. Grant upped his scoring average to 23.6 ppg, tops in the Big Ten. At times Wednesday, Frieder employed a three-guard offense consisting of Grant, Rumeal Robinson and Kirk Taylor, who was pressed into duty as Higgins' replacement. Taylor netted seven points and earned his coach's praise. "Kirk was ready to go and much more poised than I thought he might be," said Frieder. While Taylor is sure to see action against Min- nesota, Frieder will not commit to using the three- guard offense again, saying only that he would let the game situation dictate his substitutions.
