tion, battered spouses
and paternity cases. Also
included in the case load
are lease disputes, public
housing grievances, fore-
closures, medicare prob-
lems, veterans benefits
and successions, accord-
ing to the Law School
Dean's Office.
The student role will
range from researching to
organizing the cases. In
addition, the students,
unlike most lawyers, will
have to travel to the
homes of clients and wit-
nesses for interviews.
Law School Dean John
Kramer says that this
will give the students two
benefits. The first advan-
tage is the exposure to
people and their prob-
lems rather than remain-
ing "buried in books." The
second bonus is making
friends and contacts in
their chosen field, Kram-
er said.
Many students are per-
turbed that no credit will
be given as an incentive
for their volunteer work.
Other students, howev-
er, are optimistic about
the program. "It's fine
that we don't get credit
for it. I think the idea is
great, I really do. It gives
all students exposure to
the public, especially
those who have gone into
law for reasons other
than to help the public,"
first-year student Sandy
Robinson said.
Practicing attorneys
will oversee the work
done by the students.
This interaction with
lawyers is another main
purpose of the require-
ment. Officials hope that
as this unique program
progresses other public
interests and organiza-
tions will become in-
volved.
