Thursday night University alumna Jennifer Levin read from her third
novel, Shimoni's Lover, in East Quad's Benzinger Library. The well-
attended reading was one of many events hosted by the Residential
College in commemoration of its 20th anniversary. Levin, an RC
graduate and highly-acclaimed author, spoke warmly of the RC and of
Warren Hecht, her former creative writing teacher.
Daily: You graduated from the RC in 1977. Was creative writing
your major?
Levin: Yes, it was creative writing and comparative literature.
D: Did you know by the time you were in college that you wanted
to be a writer?
L: Yeah, I certainly did.
D: Did the professors in the RC influence your writing style at all?
L: Very much so. Warren Hecht was my creative writing teacher in
the RC, and he basically was influential just in the sense that he taught
me how to edit my work very strongly, and he also allowed for freedom
of content ... which is very important for a beginning writer, to just be
allowed to write whatever they want.
D: What steps did you take in college towards becoming a writer?
L: I wrote a lot, I experimented with a lot of different styles of
°writing, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I entered a lot of
Hopwood contests ... some of which I was lucky enough to win, and
others which I didn't win, but ... it was a good experience.
D: What did you do in the interim years between graduating and
getting your first book published?
L: Oh, I did everything. I worked as a waitress, a bartender, an office

clerk, a secretary, a lifeguard ... the list goes on and on. Just many jobs
on a lower-paying scale of American society! I traveled a lot - I
traveled in Europe and in the Mediterranean ... I lived in Israel for a
little over a year. It was very good experience, and I wouldn't trade any
of it.'
D: Did you write as you traveled?
L: I did quite a bit of writing; I was writing short stories at the time
and getting a lot of rejection letters from the magazines I was sending
the short stories to.
D: In all honesty, what, in your opinion, are the chances of getting
a first novel published?
L: If the book is well-written, and the story catches someone's eye,
and the person is persistent in getting the right representation -
getting an agent - I think the chances are not as bad as they might
seem from the outside.
D: So you think that it's better to have an agent?
L: I do actually think it's better to have one, simply because unless
you're a good business person yourself, as a writer and an artist, you're
really not equipped to deal with the vicissitudes of business contracts,
financing, etc. Of course, there are good agents and bad agents, and you
lose in some big ways, and you also win. It's kind of a crapshoot; like
with a lot of other things in life, you just take your chances.
D: With getting an agent, you mean?
L: With everything in publishing.
D: Have you found that publishers and editors tend to be open to
new ideas, or are they pretty rigid in what they want to publish?
L: Again, it depends on who you're talking about. There are editors
in the business who only publish a particular type of book, and there
are others who are very open to new ideas.

D: Now that you're a successful novelist, are you able to support
yourself solely by writing?
L: Yes. I consider myself lucky; although I'm not going to be cata-
logued in the annals of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, I do manage
to make some kind of a living.
D: Are you working on any books currently?
L: Yes, I've finished my third novel, Shimoni's Lover, which was
published last September, and I'm currently working on a fourth novel.
D: Tell me a little about it.
L: Well, I won't tell you the story. It's a different kind of book
from anything I've written - it's about a different kind of subject. I
expect it to be a big, long, exciting book ... I'm very excited about it. I
hope to finish it in about a year.
D: Do you get writer's block, and if so, how do you overcome it?
Do you force yourself to write every day?
L: When I'm in the middle of working on a project, I do force my-
self to write every day, or at least to try and write every day. There are
times when I take breaks to remove myself from the material so that I
gain a clear perspective on it, but it's a good idea to at least force
yourself to sit down every day. I don't always succeed in doing that, but
that's my intention, and I do pretty much succeed.
D: Looking back, is there anything that the RC had to offer that
you wish you'd taken more advantage of while you were here?
L: Oh, that's a very hard question to answer. The RC is a wonderful
school, and I feel that as far as pursuing creative writing, I took as full
advantage of it as I possibly could. There were so many other things
that I didn't have time to explore. I wish that I had (explored them), but
given my expenditure of time in the direction of creative writing, I
couldn't avoid it at the time.
