Sci. 7:00 & 9:30 p.m. The King of Denmark has been murdered, and how will Prince Hamlet avenge the death? Successful film adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy, with the text cut down to feature-length size (a complete stage performance usually takes around four hours). With Olivier, Eileen Herlie, Basil Sydney, and Jean Simmons. ROXANNE (Fred Schepisi, 1987)Michigan Theater 9:10 p.m. Never before have nose jokes seemed so harmless. Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac , the story of an articulate cavalier in dire need of rhinoplastyis updated for the '80s. Steve Martin sweetens this adap- tation with a fine performance as C.D. Bailey, the local volunteer fire chief, and Schepisi's production values aim high, so you want to like the film a lot more than you do. This film needs a villain, or at least a cynical voice to counter all the connubial bliss at the end. With Martin, Daryl Hannah as the title character, and Michael Pollard. SEVEN YEAR ITCH (Billy Wilder, 1955) MLB 4 7:00 & 9:00 p.m. Fun in the Fifties: A married man (Tom Ewell) loses his self- control when Marilyn Monroe moves in upstairs. A film that pays tribute to the male gaze: Marilyn takes bubble baths, talks like Betty Boop, and bats down her dress as she stands on a breezy subway grating; Ewell loiters about, snapping off one-liners and foaming at the mouth. Based on the play by George Axelrod. (See Story, Page 5). SUMMER NIGHT (Lina Wertmueller, 1987) Michigan Theater 11:20 p.m. Silly Marxist parable of Italian politics from the director of Seven Beauties . A beautiful tycoon captures a Communist Robin Hood and holds him for ransom. Given the director's reputation, you can probably guess the sexual misadventures that follow. Some funny moments, but Wertmueller should keep the dialectic to herself. In Italian with subtitles. WHALES OF AUGUST (L. Anderson, '1987) Michigan Theater 7:00 p.m. Lilian Gish, Bette Davis, and Vincent Price face their golden years. SATURDAY THE MEANING OF LIFE (Terry Jones, 1983) Nat. Sci. 7:30 & 9:15 p.m. Criticism of this or any other Monty Python picture is pretty much irrelevant by now, since revival groups can always find enough semi-enlightened Americans who consider British dark comedy the cultured alternative to homegrown slapstick. Fortunately the fragmented sketches work as well as some of the best moments from the troupe's TV show. Featuring the machine that goes "bing," the quest for the little fishy, and Graham Chapman's john thomas. POOR BUTTERFLY (Raul de la Torre, 1986) MLB 3 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. Singer's conflicts during Peron- era Argentina. SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER (Francois Truffaut, 1960) MLB 4 7:00 & 10: 20 p.m. Early Truffaut. Piano man gets caught up in the underworld. Leslie Halliwell: "Fair copy of an American film noir ." With Charles Aznavour and Nicole Berger. SUCH A GORGEOUS KID LIKE ME (Francois Truffaut, 1972) MLB 4 8:40 p.m. Screwball comedy about a female inmate (Bernadette Lafont) who confronts a mild-mannered social scientist. SUMMER NIGHT (Lina Wertmueller, 1987) Michigan Theater 7:10 p.m. See Friday's listing. THE WHALES OF AUGUST (L. Anderson, 1987) Michigan Theater 5:00 & 9:10 p.m. See Friday's listing. SUNDAY THE BOY FRIEND (Ken Russell, 1971) Michigan Theater 7:10 p.m. A troubled theater group puts on a vacuous musical. Sandy Wilson's stage play, a staple of bad community theatre everywhere, is brought to the screen by Russell (Tommy , Crimes of Passion , Gothic ). Leslie Halliwell: "An artistic disaster of some signif- icance." With Twiggy, Christopher Gable, and Max Adrian. TWO-LANE BLACKTOP (Monte Hellman, 1971) MLB 4 9:00 p.m. Cross-country race; Easy Rider imitation. With James Taylor and Dennis Wilson (beginning and ending their respective film careers in one fell swoop) facing off against Warren Oates. WEEKEND (Jean-Luc Godard, 1967) MLB 4 7:00 p.m. Feuding middle-class couple take a brief trip, only to end up as ,Marxist guerillas. WHALES OF AUGUST (L. Anderson, 1987) Michigan Theater 5:00 p.m. See Friday's listing. - Scott Collins 1 The Sandwich & Ice Crenm People Jason's offers a i wide variety of gourmet sand- wiches, soups, muffins, and other bakedgoods along with Ann Arbor's widest selection of ice cream, tofutti and frozen yogurt. 215 S.
