Lennon's killer makes TV movie LONDON (AP) - A British documentary broadcast yesterday shows a calm Mark Davis Chapman telling police he heard a voice in his head saying "Do it! Do it! Do it!" before he pulled a gun from his pocket and killed ex-Beatle John Lennon. Chapman, in an almost languid taped confession to New York City police, said he killed Lennon because the beloved singer-songwriter had forsaken his ideals and become "a complete phony." He also said he was playing out the role of Holden Caulfield, hero of The Catcher in the Rye, J. D. Salinger's classic novel about a troubled adolescent. "I'm indeed the Catcher in the Rye of this generation," he told invest- igators in the taped account soon after he pumped five bullets into Lennon outside his Manhattan apart- ment on Dec. 8, 1980. Yorkshire Television, which made the film for its "First Tuesday" doc- umentary series, said the tapes have never been heard in public. They did not emerge in court because Chap- man cut short the August 1981 murder trial by pleasing guilty. Now 31, Chapman is serving a life sen- tence at.Attica state penitentiary. President Reagan is proposing $36.2 million in aid to Contras. $3.6 million, which is for "lethal aid," would be put into escrow to be released after March 31 if Reagan determines the peace process has not succeeded The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the aid package today. Local anti-Contra aid activists saw Pursell's comments as potential justification for supporting Contra aid, fearing that the threat of U.S. military action would lead Pursell to support Contra aid as an alternative. Several spoke at a press conference held yesterday at.Ann Arbor's First Methodist Church. Cates called predictions that Pursell would support Contra aid "hypothetical," adding that Pursell has yet to decide his vote on Contra aid. proposal Pat Blumenthal, a member of Neighbor-to-Neighbor, said she saw Pursell's information as a "pretext" to vote for Contra aid by making the point that "even President Arias supports Contra aid in some way." "The administration is fudging to get this aid through," said David Austin, an LSA junior and member of the Latin American Solidarity Committee. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
