Williams passed for four touchdowns in the second quarter, as the Redskins surged to a 35-10 halftime lead over the Broncos. Williams, who hyperflexed his left knee late in the first quarter, returned to hit Ricky Sanders with 80- and 50-yard touchdown passes, found Gary Clark for 27 yards and Clint Didier for an 8-yarder. His four touchdown passes tied Terry Bradshaw's record for Pittsburgh against Dallas in 1979. Williams had 306 yards passing in the half. Smith, a surprise starter for George Rogers, rushed for 131 yards in the first half, five more than he had in the entire regular season. He finished with 204 yards in 22 carries, including his first two pro touchdowns. That broke Marcus Allen's record of 191, set in the Los Angeles Raiders' rout of the Redskins in 1984. Sanders had 131 yards in the first half and finished with a record 193 yards and nine receptions. Denver's innovative offense struck for five big plays in the first quarter, including the quickest touchdown in Super Bowl history, for a 10-0 lead. Elway hit rookie Ricky Nattiel for a 56-yard score with 1:57 gone, breaking Dallas' record set in 1976 when Drew Pearson took a 29-yard TD pass from Roger Staubach with 4:36 gone. Rich Karlis added a 24-yard field goal, but that was it for Denver. The win was the Redskins' second Super Bowl victory in five years and gave the NFC its fourth straight lopsided victory in the NFL's championship game. And it was an eerie reprise for the Broncos, whose coach, Dan Reeves, said they were haunted by their 39-20 loss to the New York Giants in last year's game.
