They in- cluded a couple of older songs, in- cluding their standby "Walk To- gether, Rock Together," in which the vocalist sounds like a Las Ve- gas nightclub singer, but the new songs, "Compro" and "Change In My Head," rock like the cuts off The Crew. All in all an extremely powerful batch of tunes from a band which will always be legendary in the'hardcore "scene." Fulfilling all requirements, they receive a B+. White Flag: I just can't take What ha Broncos (Continued from Page 7) tarist Will Sergeant. But who goes to a concert for the visuals? Actually, it appeared some of the female fans did, as the slight- est movement from lead singer Ian McCulloch produced Beatlemaniaish screams from portions of the audi- ence. Luckily, the music saved the 22- song, nearly two hour long concert, well worth the inflationary $18 ad- mission for the good seats. Drum- mer Pete de Freitas kept things moving quite well for the Bunny- men's postpunk speed pop songs. At times bassist Les Pattinson monop- olized the sound, to the detriment of the guitars, but only on a few occa- sions. The band played a mere three songs from their last album, Echo and the Bunnymen, most of Songs to Learn and Sing, and a healthy dose form their first two albums, Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here, much to the delight of their longtime fans. Two Egg Omelettes ippened vs. Reds Towards the end of the first set the band hauled out its now obligatory Doors cover, "Soul Kitchen," spiced with some "Back Door Man" ramblings from McCulloch. One of the most anticipated songs, "Lips Like Sugar," which McCulloch labeled "a randy little number," unfortunately lost the shimmering qualities of the studio version. The three encores included a 10 minute version of "Do It Clean," which contained snatches of other tunes identifiable only by hardcore fans or overzealous rock critics. A cover of "Twist and Shout" mutated into "La Bamba," but McCulloch didn't seem to know the words, prompting a return to the former tune. Listening to two Top Forty songs in an auditorium full of cult fans proved to be a bit ironic. Echo and the Bunnymen don't. bother with standard rock 'n' roll stage antics, but eventually McCul- loch loosened up enough to move around and show off some interest- ing arm motions. Once he even managed to sing without using the mike stand, simultaneously making it a whole five feet away from his original position! Although motion was conserved Friday night, energy definitely wasn't, especially during their final number, the Stones' "Paint It Black." The band raced through the classic chords, providing a fitting climax to the excellent show which, delighted the near-capacity crowd. -Brian Jarvinen I I )esides kins these guys seriously since hearing their cut off the Flipside compila- tion. This may fog my brain as I try to listen and offer a fair evalua- tion, but too bad. They bore me to death. Lots of people think they're hilarious but they don't even rock hard. Wimpy guitar sound matched with boring drums won't cut the mustard. Plus they sing about stupid things, yuck. I give them a C for effort. F: F is incredible. They are, flat out, a powerful hardcore band. Strong guitar, power drums, deep bass, and a sense of humor, too. The first song is titled "Roddy Piper's Rowdy Hearts Club Band (RIP)." White Flag could learn something from F. A strong B+. Adrenalin OD: By far the al- bum's best performance by quite possibly the funniest band around. A live version of "Rock and Roll Gas Station," from The Wacky Hi- Jinx of AOD, and three covers in- cluding a version of Kiss's "Deuce." They continue to live up to their reputation established on Wacky HiJinx with raunch speed guitar and a vocalist with a sense of humor like I've never heard. Will their silly shenanigans never cease? Luckily for the other bands I won't grade on a curve.
