I CAMPUS CINEMA FRIDAY ANATOMY OF A MURDER (Otto Preminger, 1959) MLB 4 7:30 p.m. Memorable crime drama, well- acted and deftly directed b y Preminger. Jealous husband (Ben Gazzara) faces an almost certain murder conviction until a skillful attorney (James Stewart) comes to his defense. Too long and strains too hard to be hip (Duke Ellington and Stewart are jazz-loving soulmates), but suspenseful none- theless. With a very fetching Lee Remick as the flirtatious wife, plus Eve Arden and George C. Scott. CAFE FLESH (Rinse Dream, 1982) Nat. Sci. 7:00 & 9:00 p.m. Described by one critic as "a thinking man's porn picture" (and what, pray tell, would a thinking woman 's porn picture look like?), this sci-fi/triple-X cult favorite traces the exploits of the "negatives," rendered sexually im- potent by nuclear holocaust, as they salve their frustrated passions by watching live sex a c t s performed by the "positives," who escaped the damages of fallout. Certainly more inspired than the average blue movie, but graphic nonetheless. CHUCK BERRY HAIL! HAIL! ROCK AND R O L L (Taylor Hackford, 1987) Michigan Theater 9:00 p.m. A tribute to the legendary rock singer and guitarist. Includes con- cert footage of Berry, Eric Clapton, and Julian Lennon, plus inter- views. FESTIVAL OF ANIMA- TION Michigan Theater 7:00 p.m. International assortment of ani- mated shorts, including examples of clay and computer animation. LIQUID SKY (Slava Tsukerman, 1983) MLB 3 7:00 & 9:00 p.m. A punked-out model (Anne Carlisle) faces sexual abuse from acquaintances, including a mis- ogynist junkie (Carlisle again), only to discover she can eliminate enemies with the help of aliens who have invaded her body. A flood of attractive sounds and images, pretty shallow as social criticism, but absolutely absorb- ing. SATURDAY BLUE VELVET (David Lynch, 1986) MLB 4 7:00 & 9:00 p.m. Traces of Lynch's early experi- mental work linger in this cult sleeper about a college student (Kyle MacLachlan) who returns to his hometown to discover the fantastically sadistic world of local hood Frank Booth' (Dennis Hopper). With graphic violence, black humor, and explicit hetero- sexual and implicit homosexual rapes, it's not for the squeamish, but technically and aesthetically it's a cinematic landmark whose influence will be felt on audiences and critics for some time to come. With Isabella Rossellini, Laura Dern, and Dean Stockwell. THE ENTERTAINER (Tony Richardson, 1960) MLB 3 7:00 p.m. A comedian (Laurence Olivier) ruminates about his past troubles and failures. Based on the successful play by John Osborne (Look Back in Anger). Leslie Halliwell: "Remains defiantly theatrical and does not take wing on film." With Joan Plowright and Roger Livesey. OUR MAN IN HAVANA, (Carol Reed, 1960) MLB 3 8:45 p.m. A vacuum cleaner salesman be- comes involved in Cuban espion- age. Based on the novel by Graham Greene. With Alec Guiness, Noel Coward, Burl Ives, and Ralph Richardson. REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (Nicholas Ray, 1954) Nat. Sci. 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. A high school loner (James Dean) and two friends (Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo) seek refuge from the deception and repression of the adult world. Often absurdly melodramatic (though well within the standards of the period), but the ironic title framed adolescent rebellion and made James Dean a star. With Jim Backus and Dennis Hopper.
