Page 8 -The Michigan Daily-Thursday, January 28, 1988 The Sharple ima"eGoalie Sharpies quiets critics IM-ewith improved concentration By ADAM SCHRAGER "I am just like everybody else. I think I'm the exception to goal- tenders," said Michigan sophomore goaltender Warren Sharples. "I agree that most of them are flaky, but not me. I think I'm about as normal as they come." While Sharples may think nor- mality fits his bill, the past few weekends, and at various times throughout this Michigan hockey season, both opponents and team- mates would disagree. After two victories over Illinois- Chicago two weekends ago, the Calgary native was named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Week for stopping 65 of 70 Flames shots. "SHARPLES was the key to the whole series," said Flames winger Sheldon Gorski, whom Sharples thwarted five times from point-blank range. "I've never been stopped on two breakaways in one game before. At least, if it's hap- pened, I can't remember when." After earning a win last Friday against Ferris State, Sharples (13-9, 4.28 goals against average) bettered his victory total of last season. The sophomore goalie has shown the maturity this season that people claimed he lacked in his first year. "Sharples impressed me tremen- dously," said Bowling Green head coach Jerry York, after Sharples de- feated his team 5-4 at Bowling Green. "He has definitely improved from last year. He seems to have aged very quickly for a young man and I hope he's not on a hot streak when we play Michigan again." The "hot and cold" streaks have been the major criticisms o f Sharples in the past. Many times, the Wolverine goaltender has shut down opponents for two or two and one-half periods before allowing the flood gates to open and chants of "sieve, sieve" to commence. While the Wolverine goalie has been winning as of late, he realizes and addresses the problem of incon- sistency. "WELL, I think that there's a lot of truth to the criticism that my concentration has been lacking at times," said Sharples. "I also think that I have come a long way in the mental game since I've been here. "These last few weekends, I have gotten the mental aspect of the game down and the result is that you are not seeing as many bad goals." Sharples' career has been similar to that of Space Mountain, one of many highs and lows. After starting his first season platooning with fel- low sophomore Glen Neary, Sharples won the job outright with a CCHA Player-of-the-Week perfor- mance against arch-rival Michigan State, and headed into this season as the number one goalie. But too many bad games brought Neary back to the forefront and put these two friends once again in competition. "The competition between Howie (Neary) and myself is something that has helped us both," said Sharples. "We both realize that if we make too many mistakes then we might not play the next weekend." WITH UPCOMING series with Michigan State, Western Michigan, and Lake Superior, Sharples will have to be in top form in order to keep Michigan near the top of the CCHA standings. "Very few people go to work ev- ery day and have 6,000 people see every little mistake they make," said Sharples in his "normal" manner. "You know that if you do make a mistake, it will show up on the scoreboard." "With the performance that he had against us, I hope that he turns pro- fessional early," said Illinois- Chicago head coach Val Belmonte. "If he thinks he's normal, he's defi- nitely flaky. He is a breed apart." 4 Perles rumored to join Packei° Daily Photo by ROBIN LOZNAK Sophomore goalie Warren Sharples continued his hot streak last weekend by notching his 13th victory, eclip- sing his last season's win total. Lately, Sharples has avoided much of the inconsistency which plagued his rookie season, and the first part of this year. GREEN BAY, Wis.
