4 Page 10-The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, January 27, 1988 Miller During my four years at the Daily, I have seen hundreds of Wolverine sporting events ranging from gymnastics meets to football games. Some were exciting. Others bor- ing. But out of everything I have witnessed, some events naturally stand out. Start the drum roll. The Miller Time finale. Here is the Miller Time top 10 list of sports events I have attended while a student at Michigan: 10) Baseball: Michigan 5, Ohio State 4 - This game was the last regular season contest of 1986 and had no meaning in the standings. The Wolverines already had clinched the Big Ten championship. But Michigan's two-out rally in the bot- tom of the seventh inning typifies Middaughian baseball. Head coach Bud Middaugh's phi- losophy is simple. "You play me in badminton or croquet or whatever you want to play me in, I'm going to beat you," Middaugh said. "I don't care who you are or where you're from. I'm going to try to beat you anyhow." In this game, Middaugh put in pitcher Mike Ignasiak to run for first baseman Hal Morris. The swap gained Middaugh a step on the basepaths. A step the coach utilized when the next batter walked and Time Darrin Campbell singled sharply to left field. Middaugh waved Ignasiak home. Somehow, Igansiak was safe, scor- ing the game-tying run. "That was a short throw. One that should be made," Middaugh said. "But we had been trying to force the issue all day, and I wasn't about to give up." Middaugh will never give up on his quest to bring Michigan a n NCAA title. And if his past record is any indication, he is well on his way to realizing that goal. After the Wolverines lost in the 1986 NCAA regionals, Middaugh talked with the press on the field af- ter the game. As I walked off the di- amond, Middaugh put his arm around me and apologized for not being able to take me to the College World Series. What a competitor. 9) Hockey: Michigan 11, RPI 10 OT - A shootout at the Yost Ice corral. The big play, though, was made by a goalie. Walk-on netminder Mike Rossi, who had entered the game in the third period, stoned RPI's Neil Hernberg on a breakaway in the overtime. Hernberg, ironically, was a teammate of Rossi's in high school. 8) High school basketball: Sagi- naw Buena Vista 33, Flint Beecher 32 - Chris Coles nailed a 55-foot does Letterman; eeh-gads F,3rsAMiller Time SBY SCOFF G. MILLER shot to give Buena Vista the 1986 Class B title at Crisler Arena. It is difficult to decide what was more exciting, the shot or the aftermath. Buena Vista coach Norwaine Reed fainted into the arms of a referee. Reed later claimed he personally knew the official. Beecher coach Moses Lacey stormed around, rant- ing and raving. Lacey then spiked his runner-up trophy to the floor. Mr. Class continued his tirade at the press conference, claiming the time should have expired before the buzzer-beating shot. "The time keeper must have been asleep or on drugs," said Lacey. That statement could have applied to Lacey himself. Mr. Class returned to Crisler last season and captured the champi- onship. True to form, Lacey blew kisses to all the fans who booed him. 7) Football: Michigan 17, Illi- nois 14 - This year's contest at Champaign was not an artistic mas- terpiece. In fact, the only excitement in the game was Michigan's last scoring drive. Phil Webb spun a web into the end zone for the victory. But since it helped contribute to Illini head coach Mike White's resigna- tion/firing last week, this was an event. White said after the game that he was ashamed of his team. The ad- mission was music to my ears. I also really enjoyed the 69-13 thrashing in 1986 the Wolverines gave to White. So did Michigan. White should have been an evan- gelist. Instead he tried his phony act on football fans. Now he is gone. Bummer. White was a black eye in the Big Ten. The NCAA investigated the Illini more times than Gary Hart has lied to the public. Michigan's pro- gram served as a foil to White's. ABC sports commentator Keith Jackson called Michigan the "citadel" of college athletics at a press dinner before the Notre Dame game this year. Jackson added that it was good to be at Michigan, a symbol of all that is good in college athletics. I found his comments ironic in light of the then uproar over a story about Wolverine athletic director Don Canham's phys. ed. class. But after thinking about Jackson's com- ments, I knew he was right. The integrity the department displays is symbol- ized by one individual - Bo Schembechler. 6) Basketball: Michigan 69, Iowa 67 3 OTs - This contest spurred the 1984-85 Wolverines to a school record 17-game winning streak. Roy Tarpley hit the biggest shot of his life to win it. Even Antoine Joubert played well in this one. The below zero temperature that night just did not bother me on the way home. 5) Wrestlemania III - Pro- claimed as bigger, better, and badder, this event lived up to its hype. I was part of the largest indoor crowd ever, 93,173. It signalled the beginning of Red 4 Berenson's resurrection of Michigan hockey. Right winger Brad McCaughey deked goaltender Bob Essensa and tucked in a backhand with a few minutes remaining. Before the game ended, McCaughey beat Spartan bad boy Mitch Messier senseless. 3) Football: Michigan 27, Ohio State 17 - Jim Harbaugh to John Kolesar. The pass covered 77 yards. 4 Michigan Stadium erupted. Nothing else need be said. 2) Basketball: Michigan 80, Indiana 52 - Any trashing of a Bob "don't call me Bobby" Knight is an event. To beat Knight for the Big Ten championship is something special. As Michigan coach Bill Frieder repeats ad nauseam, Knight and he are the last two coaches to win the Big Ten outright. Richard Rellford's dunk to open the contest stands out. Poor Rellford is now a CBA lifer. The noise level this game gener- ated at Crisler may never be heard again. 1) Football: Michigan 28, Al- abama 24 - This season's Hall of Fame Bowl victory capped a tough football season. This game allowed everyone involved with the Wolver- ine program to forget a year of in- juries, Bo's illness, and a sub-par record. - Who can forget Jamie Morris' great runs or the fourth-down pass from Demetrius Brown to Kolesar? A great moment among many over the last four years. Truly Miller Time. NATIONAL AUDITION TOUR for singers/dancers, musicians, magicians. Also interviewingsfor stage technicians and troupe managers.
