Carter,

Heard

sti

By Brian Bonet

Betty Carter is 58 years-old.,
Heard is 70. They're both

J.C.
old

enough to be my grandparents.
Big deal. These two bandleaders
smash all connections rocking
chairs, knitting needles, arthritis, and
Efferdent have with the Golden
Years. Life after 30? After seeing
these two, how about life after 60,
70, or 80?
Armed with a strong, young trio
and her veteran, wide-ranging and at
times rapid firing vocal chords, Betty
Carter took command of the Bird of
Paradise this weekend - literally.
Dressed in a metallic gold turban,
a black, gold sequined gown, and a
black bow tie, Carter covered the
stage in true vocal jazz tradition on
Friday night. Her ballads silenced the

crowd until her last note faded out
completely while her faster-tempo
scat and bebop numbers kept fingers
snappin' and feet tappin' throughout.
She left ne doubt as to who was the
boss. The audience knew it and so
did the trio.
Thank you Ron Brooks.
J.C. Heard's Saturday night per-
formance was the first time I've been
to Depot Town's Farmers' Market
and I'm convinced there's nothing
like it. Imagine a converted freight
station built of brick with a stage
that's large enough for a 13-piece
big band, elevated above a crowded
dance floor. Add tables of food (even
popcorn and cookies!) and a paranoid
chief of security who checked m y
I.D. twice (the majority of the crowd
was mom and dad's age) and you
have the delightful Depot Town's
Farmers' Market.

11 going
Don't get the notion that Depot
Town is strictly for the over 50 age
bracket. Age has nothing to do with
it. Despite the fact that he is 5 0
years my senior, I am convinced that
I would enjoy hanging out with J.C.
Heard. But after hearing Heard and
his orchestra perform the title num-
ber of their latest album, Some of
This, Some of That, I have doubts
that I could keep up - honestly.
For this number, stand up bass was
substituted for electric and bandleader
Heard became a funky James Brown
protege on vocals.
However, the majority of the
show was purely big band with im-
pressive soloing from all sections.
Rarely did I see the huge grin on
J.C. Heard's face disappear. He was
purely enjoying himself. And so was
everybody else.
Thank you WEMU. See you on.

strong
February 20, for the second in the
radio station's three part Winter Jazz
Series.
You can't help but romanticize
these performances by two influen-
tial bandleaders who have shaped and
continue to influence the realm of
traditional jazz. It is music that has
its roots in a less technical, and less
pop-oriented culture - long before
Kasey Kasem's countdown, Korgs,
or K-Tel.
Heard and Carter are more than
just throwbacks and are far from
dusty dinosaurs. But they are more
than simply classic jazz performers
- they are also jazz preservers. As
bandleaders, they share the stage
with young, aspiring musicians,
allowing them to showcase their
talent in a musical form where
opportunity knocks much less fre-
quently than MTV airs a Whitesnake
video. And, of course, whether it be
for lack of opportunity, recognition,
or big money, many jazz musicians
are tempted to rocket into the realm
of pop music. Maybe it's human na-
ture or maybe iW'sfuture shock, but it
happens time after time. And to be
honest, it can sting.
Thank you Betty Carter. And
thank you J.C. Heard.
