Dinger parade leads Blue over Purdue By RICHARD EISEN Earlier this spring, the road was unkind to the Michigan baseball team, as they lost five of ten games in Texas. But things have changed, as the road has become a little less nasty to the Wolverines. Last weekend at Purdue they swept two doubleheaders from the Boilermakers, giving them eight straight Big Ten road victo- ries. In all, Michigan has won 17 straight road games. In its last eight road games, Michigan, 31-7, 11-1 in the Big Ten, has scored 52 runs while allowing the opposition to score only eight times. And this past weekend was no different as Michigan creamed Purdue with a barrage of masterful pitching and raw power. The balls were smashed. Many divots were implanted behind the walls as Michigan hit 13 home runs, including back-to-back taters, a variety of two-run and three- run dingers, plus a Steve Finken grand slam. The Purdue bats were smashed. The Wolverine pitchers, who rested most of last week, were just as sharp as the hitters, tossing three shutouts. IN SATURDAY'S first game, sophomore Mike Grimes pitched the first of the weekend shutouts, winning 1-0. Grimes, 4-0, needed Ross Powell's help to pick up the win. Michigan got the lone run of the game when Eddie Woolwine walked, stole second and was singled home by Bill St. Peter, one of three St. Peter game winning RBI's on the weekend. In the second game, Michigan got its home run trots in gear, scoring eight runs in the seventh inning. In the Wolverine 14-4 win, Finken hit his grand slam along with Darren Campbell's first of three weekend shots. Phil Price homered for his team-leading ninth as Tom Brock also hit the first of his three weekend round trippers. Mike Ignasiak, 7-1, picked up his 30th career win, which ties a Michigan record held by Rich Stoll. While the team slept Saturday night, their bats didn't as Michigan continued the barrage on Sunday. In the first game, St. Peter continued his torrid streak, hitting two home runs while Finken and Greg Haegar connected for back-to-back shots. Junior Chris Lutz, now 5-1, pitched an 11-0 shutout. The nightcap featured the third shutout of the series, pitched by Jim Abbott, 6-1, lowering his ERA to 4.10. Campbell, Brock, and Finken all connected for homers. Michigan hosts second place Michigan State, 9-3 in the Big Ten, in an important doubleheader tomorrow at Ray Fisher Stadium. Both teams were happy to move outside, and both coaches weret impressed by several outstanding in- dividual performances. For the women's team, shot put- ter Sonya Payne finished in third with a toss of 44'8". Payne said she1 "wasn't that happy," with her per-' formance, yet she did say that this was definitely making progress. Payne is looking forward to thej national meets and the opportunity to qualify for the Olympic trials. "Realistically, I don't think I can make it to the games, but I want to have the chance to try," said Payne. "It would be nice just to say I made it that far." Coach James Henry was pleased with Payne, and 10,000-meter runner Cheri Sly. Coming off a foot in- jury, Sly had a time of 35:16.96, to finish fourth. "I was pretty happy with the race, especially considering the injury," said Sly. "As soon as I got off the line, I was hurting. It's slowly get- ting better, but I'm having trouble working out." HENRY ALSO noted the performances of Melissa Thompson, who finished sixth in the 1500-meter race, and Mindy Rowand, with a time of 16:50.6 in the 3000-meter race. "I felt we did pretty good," said Henry. "We still need a lot of work, but it's a good place to start from. The performances by the placers were exceptional." For the men's team, Matt Butler finished sixth in the 800-meter race, with a time of 1:50.96. Jon Scherrer finished seventh in the invitational 5000-meters with a time of 13:58.2.
