myths surrounding tornadoes such as
opening windows to equalize pres-
sure in buildings, said Donna Sea-
mon, a disaster preparedness and
planning specialist at the Ann Arbor
Police Department.
People cannot outrun tornadoes in
cars, she said. Those trapped outside
should "get to the lowest possible
area, such as a ditch, and cover
yourself from debris," she said. In

The strongest tornado ever locally
recorded touched down in Flint in
1953, and was an F-5, the highest
classification ever given a tornado.
An F-5, with winds up to 318 mph,
can "wipe out a whole town," Snider
said.
Tornadoes are often found in
Southern Michigan and the rest of
Tornado Alley because of conditions
caused by moist air from the Gulf of
Mexico and a blocking of Pacific
cool air by the Rocky Mountains,
Snider said.
