The Michigan Daily-Monday, April 18, 1988- Page 11 Women's softball swats Buckeyes By STEVEN COHEN The Michigan women's softball team travelled to Ohio State last weekend look- ing to take doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday. Instead, it had to settle for three shutout wins and a close loss in extra innings. The Wolverines had won nine of their past ten games and had a 14-9 overall record before entering the weekend series with the Buckeyes. The reasons for their success were good pitching, solid defense and timely hitting. The trip to Ohio State left Michigan Coach Carol Hutchins with mixed feelings. Seeking four wins, Hutchins was left un- satisfied. In addition, the manner in which they lost did not please Hutchins. YET, THERE were many positives that can be emphasized. First, the Wolver- ines gave the Buckeyes their first three home losses of the season. Second, the weekend didn't really harm the Wolverines conference record, which now stands at 8-2. The reasons for Michigan's victories this weekend were absent in the first game on Saturday. The Wolverines, who had a fielding percentage of .980 before the se- ries, committed three errors. In addition, the team left ten runners on base in its 5-4 defeat. Ohio State trailed 3-1 going into the fifth inning before tying the score. In the tenth inning, Michigan outfielder Beth Mueller scored on a fielders choice by third basewoman Jenny Allard. OSU tied the score at four in the bottom of that inning and proceeded to win in the eleventh in- ning. That one game seemed to be the excep- tion rather than the rule for the Wolverines. Michelle Bolster, who was the losing pitcher on Saturday, had pitched well in the first game of the doubleheader on Friday. ON FRIDAY, Bolster pitched a one- hitter, recorded seven strikeouts, and walked one. The team produced nine runs and nine hits for Bolster as they won handily, 9-0. Leading the hitting barrage was Allard with two hits and Mueller with two hits includ- ing a three-run triple. Andrea Nelson led the team to a second shutout on Friday with a three-hitter. Sarah Dyksterhouse had a three-hit, three RBI performance, and Bonnie Tholl hit a run scoring triple, in the Wolverines' 5-0 vic- tory. After the lapse on Saturday, the team came up strong in the second game of the doubleheader to redeem themselves. Andrea Nelson pitched a no-hitter and the team ex- ploded in the fifth inning for six runs to win, 6-0. BOTH MEN AND WOMEN DOMINATE REGATTA Crew team cruises to victory a What S Happening By ADAM BENSON For the last twelve years, the Michigan men's and women's crew teams have hosted the Classic Re- gatta at Gallup Park. The Regatta is designed to bring more attention to the club, and give all team members the opportunity to participate in a race. "My friends get to see why I'm always so busy," said Marty Crew, a member of the victorious varsity men's heavyweight four-person boat. "It's nice to row at home." Crew's boat was one of eight Michigan boats to win races this weekend. Other teams to win were the men's novice four, novice heavyweight eight, varsity lightweight eight, novice lightweight eight, and the women's novice four, novice eight, and the varsity eight races. Coach Tom Welch was pleased with his team's performance, but tried to keep the day in perspective. "It's nice to win, but Michigan State and Grand Valley State are not the greatest competition in the world," said Welch. "I'm glad that the team had a chance to row at home. It's fun for us to row for friends." Welch singled out the men's novice lightweight eight and the women's novice four team as particularly strong performers. PAM INGLIS, a senior mem- ber of the women's varsity eight team, felt a bit sentimental racing in her last Regatta at Gallup Park. "It's weird knowing that I'll never row here for U of M again," said In- glis. "I'm going to miss it." Inglis noted that Saturday's strong winds made rowing more difficult. "It felt really strong. Considering the wind, we rowed our best race." Anne Carroll, also a member of the women's varsity eight and the team's secretary, felt her boat's win was a "satisfying race," but she was even more pleased with the fan turnout for the Regatta. "There was a lot of enthusiasm for this, and the team did really well," said Carroll. "The weather was bad early this morning, but people still came to see the race. It's nice for people to see us." Besides being a great showcase for local fans, the Regatta is an impor- tant tune-up for larger, more presti- gious events. Coach Welch looks forward to entering crews in the SIRA's in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on April 30th, and the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, May 12-14. The Dad Vails will feature teams from such national rowing powers as Georgetown, Temple, and New Hampshire, and is sure to provide the team with an opportunity to see how well they match up against Eastern competition.
