Men's Tennis vs. Ball State Tomorrow, 2:30 p.m. Liberty Sports Complex SPORTS Baseball vs. Michigan State (DH) Wednesday, 1 p.m. Ray Fisher Stadium The Michigan Daily Monday, April 18, 1988 Page 9 Boles stars in annual football game .r -White beats Blue in spring scrimmage ,' I By PETE STEINERT Tony Boles already has the perfect initials for a tailback, and Satur-, day he showed he just might have the talent to match his appropriate, name. The redshirt sophomore rushed for 135 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns in leading the White past the Blue, 20-17, in Michi, gan's annual spring football scrimmage at Michigan Stadium. Boles scampered 63 yards on the game's second play from scrim- mage for his first touchdown. He then capped the day's scoring with a five-yard run with 9:38 left in the fourth quarter. "Boles is pretty good, isn't he?" asked quarterback Demetrius Brown,: who completed six-of-nine passes for the White. "He had a great spring, and when he has (Leroy) Hoard and (Jarrod) Bunch working back there_,,. with him, and (Allen) Jefferson helping, we'll be real good back there."- Boles' performance strengthens his chances of inheriting Jamie, Morris' vacated tailback position next fall. "I felt good all spring," Boles said. "I was healthy, I was relaxed, and I could concentrate more on football. (But) the job is not mine. I just think I had a good spring practice, but Jefferson was hurt, and we have a lot of talent back there." THE 6-2, 190-POUNDER flashed breakaway ability on his, long touchdown run, 22 seconds into the contest. He took a handoff. from Brown, scooted through the right side, and quickly hit full stride on his way toward the end zone. Boles also caught a 23-yard pass on the same drive. He had three receptions on the day for 38 yards. Last season, the Westland native saw action in just four games and, carried the ball only once. Academic problems forced him to miss a. large portion of fall practice, but he said those problems are behind him. "I'm in good shape, and I think that's helped me this spring," Bolest said. "I felt a lot better about everything. I didn't have a lot of things ooh my mind that bothered me." Boles' toughest competition for the starting tailback spot remains Jefferson and Tracy Williams. Jefferson saw the most action of the three last season despite missing six games with a broken arm. A leg injury has slowed the Detroit native in spring drills. "We didn't get anything out of Jefferson (this spring), so I can't tell you much about that," Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler said. "But I thought Tracy Williams and Boles had excellent springs. "They're excellent backs with the ball. They have to learn how to* play without the ball. Apparently, they haven't watched Jamie enough, to know they have to do that." SCHEMBECHLER SAID his tailbacks' ability to block and catch the ball out of the backfield will play a large role in his decision- making process. In addition to Boles' effort, the 6-0, 209-pound Williams also turned ; in a good effort Saturday with 83 yards rushing on 16 carries. He scored ; his team's first touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter. Williams turned the ball over once, one of five Blue fumbles. Jefferson carried seven times for the Blue for 18 yards. "Once we start again in August, it (the starting job) will be all up for grabs," Boles said. "I'm looking forward to the practices before the season, but right now I'm just happy spring is over." Men netters serve II * From staff reports The Michigan men's tennis team returns from its weekend road trip victorious after trouncing Big Ten opponents Indiana and Ohio State, 6- 0 and 7-2, respectively. Michigan's number one seed, Ed Nagel helped Michigan breeze past Indiana as he easily defeated Sven Salumaa 6-2, 6-0. The rest of the Wolverines followed suit as they ,,swept the rest of the singles matches. The score, however, does not reflect the problems that the Wolverines had to overcome. Except for Nagel and Jon Morris, who de- feated Charles Wright 6-0, 6-0, most of the players needed to come from behind to pull out victories. Michigan's Dan Goldberg, Mali- vai Washington, Brad Koontz, and Jean Roussel were stretched to three sets by the Hoosiers. Goldberg, 1, OSU on Washington, and Roussel all lost the first set of their respective matches before winning the last two. Because the team victory was de- cided after the singles matches, Indi- ana decided to forfeit the doubles competition. This is not unusual for Michigan as the Wolverines had not played any Big Ten doubles matches until Ohio State. "This (victory over Ohio State) was very important because they a platter will be a team to watch at the Big Ten championships," said Michigan head coach Brian Eisner. Michigan did not clinch the match after the singles play. Hence, the Wolverines were forced to play doubles action for the first time in the Big Ten season. The rustiness did not show, how- ever, as the No. 1 doubles team in the midwest, Nagel-Washington, de- feated the No. 2 seed Miguel-Weis- man 7-6, 7-5 to clinch the match.
