Says Schembechler; "My deep feeling is that we should at least match the production of the offensive team a year ago in terms of yardage, scoring, possession time, and perhaps play better in some of the games that we didn't play well in, such as Minnesota and Arizona State. The defensive front three is led by tackle Mark Messner and middle guard Billy Harris. Senior linebacker Andree McIntyre takes over for Andy Moeller as the defensive signal caller, and Erik Campbell is the lone returning starter in the secondary. "The defense will be the key to Michigan's success," says the Michigan mentor, "because last year our defense was below par and it cost us in a couple of those close games. Particularly in the secondary where we lost some fine players." FROM THIS mixture of Show how you feel with ... "The bottom line is that the attitude is still going to be the most determining factor in whether you win or not," Schembechler says. "And attitude is demonstrated mostly by senior players. Whether the leadership (we have) is going to be good enough to give us that great attitude has to be proved, and if it turns out that we're going to get that kind of leadership, then we should be in the race with a chance to win." Somehow number one G r e g McMurtry catches the ball and runs for a Wolverine touchdown. "We've only called that play one other time in my 19 years here," laughs Schembechler after the game. Michigan 49, Northwestern 14 - Even with Washington State and Long Beach State on the schedule, the Wolverines graciously allow Northwestern to be the homecoming opponent. The Wildcats graciously lose by many points. Michigan 31, Minnesota 17 - The biggest fight of the day occurrs when Demetrius Brown and Jeff Brown argue over who gets to hoist the Brown Jug first. Michigan 69, Illinois 13 - Schembechler and Illini coach Mike White don't discuss recruiting techniques over cocktails after this one. Michigan 24, Ohio State 21 - The battle for the Rose Bowl. Buckeye coach Earle Bruce appears in a tuxedo and top hat. Schembechler appears in combat fatigues, dark glasses, and a headset. Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman dominates the first half by making 20 tackles. Michigan stays in the game because Buckeye wideouts combine to drop 10 passes. In the sescond half, angry Wolverine offensive lineman John "Jumbo" Elliott plows into Spielman, who had lost his helmet earlier in the play. Spielman starts singing "hail to the victors" but remains in the game. The Michigan running attack dominates the rest of the contest. Wolverine defensive lineman Mark Messner leads the cheers as time expires. It is on to the Rose Bowl for Michigan. So long to a perfect season. Miller Time Bose Bowl By DARREN JASEY The final score 'was 22-15. Michigan had lost its seventh Rose Bowl in eight trips with head coach Glenn E. Schembechler at the helm. Now it is late August. Schembechler is heading into his 19th year at Michigan. The Rose Bowl failure appears completely forgotten. The coach is assembled before the press. He has that preseason gleam in his eyes. His Wolverines have recorded a two-year record of 21-3-1, including a Fiesta Bowl victory in 1986. His team is the defending Big Ten champion. The man they call "Bo" is once again at the top of the heap. '87 Schedule Sep. 12 Notre Dame 1:00 p.m. Sep. 19 Wash. But Schembechler knows that preseason polls are more an indication of a successful past than of a successful future. He says his team won't finish 6-6 but hints that those rankings might be a little lofty. "I'm not sure about this team," Schembechler says. "We've got enough talent to win the (Big Ten title), but we're young, particularly in the backfields - the secondary and offensive backs. That may be a problem. And we're not deep at a lot of positions." Down on the Michigan Stadium field the mood is different. Schembechler's players are scattered on the turf posing for pictures and talking to the media. They too are basking in the glory of a Big Ten championship. THE MEMORY of last January's loss to Arizona State burns bright in the player's minds. "It was like a blessing in disguise," says senior tailback Jamie Morris. "It keeps the fire burning in us. We want to get back there. We Michigan lost to the eventual national champion twice in Bowl games while under Bo Schembechler - Brigham Young in 1984 and Oklahoma in 1976. Middle guard Billy Harris aims at opposing backs and another Big Ten title. had a taste of it, we went there last year, didn't win it and now we want to go back there and win it." "We want a victory out there bad," adds senior defensive lineman Billy Harris says. "We want to be Rose Bowl champs also." Says junior quarterback Demetrius Brown; "We want to go back and win. It's something we've discussed with the coaches present and without them." ROSE BOWL losses are old hat to Schembechler. He is used to them. His players aren't. In 1987 a Rose Bowl loss is the rallying point for the team. A return trip to Pasadena is not out of the question for Michigan. The Wolverines compare favorably to the nation's best teams in the trenches, at receiver, and on special teams. With t h e g graduation o f quarterback J i m ' Harbaugh, the team could revert back to its 6-6 form of 1984. Although seemingly impossible imagine: t~ Miller Time BY SCOTTG. MILLER Michigan 28, Notre Dame 21 - The Brown derby. Wolverine coach Bo Schembechler stays true to his word by selecting his quarterback five minutes before kickoff. Demetrius Brown makes the most of his opportunity. Notre Dame flanker Tim Brown nearly single handedly ruins Demetrius Brown's debut with two touchdown receptions and a 95-yard kickoff return. Not to be outdone, the least heralded Brown on the field, Michigan's Jeff Brown, catches the game-winning touchdown pass with under a minute to play. Somewhere head Zip Gerry Faust smiles. Last year, Michigan State coach George Perles decided to run the ball down the Wolverines' throats despite the absence of star tailback Lorenzo White. Anyone with an IQ above wide receiver Andre Rison's uniform number (1) would have thrown the ball on every opportunity. Perles tries the same game plan this year and again it fails.
