_ _ 7W -IV I Vitak It isn't Dick Vitale's sight that is causing problems around Ann Arbor right now, it's his insight. Vitale, he of the coke-bottle glasses (contact lenses for the television cameras these days) and the caffeinated personality, the for- mer coach of the University of De- troit Titans and Detroit Pistons, has picked the Michigan Wolverines the No. 1 college basketball team in the land. picks Michigan No. 1 No. 1?! Well. No big shock. If Jeane Dixon can make a living prognosti- cating, then Vitale might as well be allowed to also. He's not predicting anything rash like "peace in our time." THE BIGGEST shock might come when fans realize that Vitale soon will return to television's airwaves on ESPN and ABC, meaning he can tell thousands of M fans at least once a day - more if he's on the air anymore than he was last season - about the No. 1 Wolverines. You might not remember exactly what this entails. Take some aspirin, - no, lots of aspirin - sit down gently - now! - and clear your mind for the cacophony that is Dick Vitale. Ready? "YOU LOOK AT MICHIGAN'S PERSONNEL AND YOU SEE NOTHING BUT HIGH SCHOOL STARS ACROSS THE BOARD!" he bellowed in a phone interview earlier this month. "IF THEY CAN GO TO THE BUZZER AND PLAY INDIANA - WHO WINS THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP - WITHOUT A TERRY MILLS, OR A RUMEAL ROBINSON, OR A SEAN HIG- GINS - IF THEY CAN BEAT PURDUE BY 30, BEAT IOWA, Rush Delivery BY JEFF RUSH (Jeffs AND BEAT SYRACUSE- I ASK YOU, ARE THEY NOT IN THE TOP 10? "THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS... I SAW THEM LOSE CLOSE GAMES TO GREAT TEAMS LAST YEAR. THEY NEEDED ONE MORE PLAYER. ALL I SEE NOW IS WIN, WIN, WIN! "WHEN IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE, IF THEY STAY HEALTHY, THEY'RE GOING TO BE KNOCKING AT THE DOOR COME NCAA TIME!" OH YEAH! exclaim Michigan fans who are thirsting for a national championship in any sport. Oh yeah! exclaims Michigan's only se- nior starter, Grant, who will tell you he is the best two-way guard in the country. OH NO! exclaims Wolver- ine coach Bill Frieder, who wants nothing to do with the label No. 1. Frieder pours out excuses as to why the Wolverines are overrated the same way Vitale pours out superla- tives. "I don't have a high school All- American on this team that's ever played a game for me," says Frieder. Plenty of coaches would be glad to take those All-Americans off his hands. "We've only got one guard this year that has ever played in a basketball game for Michigan," said Frieder. He forgets to mention that that guard is Gary Grant, who could have been an NBA lottery pick last year. "You have to have veterans re- turning with success," said Frieder. Okay. Grant has played in the NCAA Tournament the past three years, and has two Big Ten titles to his credit. Glen Rice has played in See FRIEDER.
