The Wolverines (7-3 overall, 5-2 fig Ten) and the Buckeyes (5-4-1, 3- 4) are having similar injury-filled sasons. Michigan, though, owns a uitter record because of some good Jck, such as last week's last minute score against Illinois. Conversely, some bad breaks Mve ruined Ohio State's season. The Bpckeyes have played decently but not well enough to win despite all s last stand: Buckeyes hope to end Bruce era with victory over Blue their talent. The Buckeyes are far from a bad team. They have lost their four games by a total of 10 points. Last week epitomized the Ohio State season. A 28-yard touchdown pass from Iowa's Chuck Hartlieb on fourth down with six seconds left in the game sent Buckeye fans home disappointed. OHIO STATE'S season opened on an equally disappointing note. The NCAA ruled preseason All-America wide receiver Chris Carter ineligible for taking money from an agent. Athletic Director Rick Bay (who resigned Monday in opposition to Bruce's firing) refused to petition the NCAA for Carter's reinstatement despite Bruce's wishes to the contrary. Then, to add to Bruce's woes, his second-best re- ceiver, Nate Harris, became academically ineligible. "Losing Carter and then Harris right off the bat put Bruce behind the eight ball," said Schembechler. "Let's not kid one another. If people cannot see that in Columbus, they're crazy., Juniors Everett Ross and Vince Workman have not softened the loss of 99 combined receptions by Carter and Harris last season. Ross leads the team with 25 catches for an average of 21.7 per catch. Workman, who was converted from tailback in the middle of the season, has 22 catches besides leading the team in rushing with 495 yards. Carlos Snow replaced Workman at tailback. The 5-9, 194-pound freshman speedster is averaging four yards a carry, rushing for 339 yards this season. Fullback George Cooper (330 yards rushing) and quarterback Tom Tupa round out the Buckeye backfield. Despite his team's lack of success, Tupa is completing 53 per- cent of his passes and is leading the conference in punting with an aver- age of 46.7 yards per punt. "TUPA HAS improved tremendously. He's mobile, has a good arm, and is playing well," said Schembechler. "When you take into consideration Snow's quickness and Workman's and Ross' ability to run after they catch the ball, they have excellent skill people." The Buckeyes also have excellent outside linebackers in Eric Kumerow and Mike McCray. Inside linebacker Chris Spielman may be the best in the nation. The senior consensus All-American (140 total tackles this year) has not missed a down all sea- son. In last season's game with the Wolverines, the Massilion, Ohio, native made 29 tackles. "Spielman covers the entire field so well," said Michigan offensive coordinator Gary Moeller. "To go right or left doesn't make a difference because Spielman has such great flow to the football." While the flow of events the past week will influence the game, tradi- tion dictates Michigan-Ohio State is something special. "This is our big game. The most emotion-packed game of the year," said Bruce. "Maybe the luster is off a little because of the records, but it's the game both teams play for." "Let's not have all these other things detract from the game," added Schembechler, "because this is what college football is all about Michigan vs. Ohio State." Blue Banter -Michigan fans are encouraged to give Earle Bruce a standing ovation when he is introduced at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. His firing gives merit to many of the criti- cisms of college athletics. -The Schembechler quote of the week deals with the Dominos Pizza store he owns in Columbus. "My entrepreneurial affairs are my ownt business," he said. -A Wolverine victory tomorrow would give Schembechler his 18th season with eight or more victories in his 19 years at Michigan. -A Wolverine victory tomorrow would also extend the Buckeye's current losing streak to four games, their longest since 1943. -From 1968-1982, the Michigan- Ohio State game had some effect on determining the Big Ten representa- tive in the Rose Bowl. -Wide receiver John Kolesar will return to action against Ohio State after missing two weeks with mononucleosis. Kolesar will be used on kick return teams. -Offensive tackle Mike Husar hurt his back in practice Wednesday but should play against the Buckeyes. - -Michigan's other offensive tackle John Elliott should be 100 percent this week. A sore shoulder hampered Elliott against Illinois last weekend. -Offensive guard Tom Dohring could see action against Ohio State after missing four games with a knee injury. The sophomore has practiced all week. -Linebacker Keith Cooper (knee) will return to the lineup after miss- ing last week's game with the Illini. Cooper is fourth on the team in tackles with 45. Bruce was told earlier in the week that this would be his final game with the Buckeyes. - Meanwhile, Ohio State place- kicker Matt Frantz, a senior, has his own reasons for wanting to beat Michigan. Frantz missed a 45-yard field goal with 1:03 remaining that would have defeated Michigan last year. It's been a living hell for him ever since. "It's been 11 months, 28 days, 11 minutes and five seconds," Frantz said. "For 11 months I've been not Matt, the placekicker for Ohio State. "Of course I'd like another chance at them. I know it sounds a little selfish, but I'd like it to come down to that last kick again." If it does, the stakes won't be as high this time. Michigan's victory over the Buckeyes last year allowed the Wolverines to tie Ohio State for the Big Ten championship. "All week long, it's the Michigan game, the biggest game of the year," Frantz said, "Then when it starts, for 60 minutes, it's just a hard football game, another football game on Saturday afternoon.
