The Thanksgiving
Book
By Jerome Agel, Melinda
Corey, and Jason Shulman
Dell Books
$8.95 Paperback
"Thanksgiving is a favorite holi-
day for Americans of every shape,
size and color" begins the glowing
self-description for this new capital-
istic plot, courtesy of Dell Trade
Paperbacks. Perhaps you know peo-
ple who hate Thanksgiving. Perhaps
they think it's patronizing to give
thanks to God for "discovering" an
inhabited continent. That Thanks-
giying represents a rude American
boorishness, that our God is better
than your God, that our skin is
better than yours.
Or perhaps Thanksgiving repre-
sents the beginning of the great
American secular triadic holiday. It
represents a time to be deeply disap-
pointed that our family lives aren't
like The Cosby Show. Statistically,
this is the time of year to commit
suicide.
Okay, so we start off with a chip
on our shoulders. Maybe the holiday
itself isn't so bad. But if you have
doubts, here we have a book to help
you enjoy the holiday. You get an
illustrated cookbook, history lesson,
family scrapbook, and football
scorecard, all in one. Such a bunch
of mullarchy hasn't shown its face
since the greeting card industry came
up with Boss's Day. But wait,
there's more. There's Thanksgiving
poems and songs, prayers, and five
different one-word games! Are you
excited yet? A space for everything,
Thanksgiving memories, the afore-
mentioned football scorecard, even a
photo album! You'd pay $8.95 in
stores, but then can your self-esteem
take it?
In spite of the inclusion of
"leftover specialities" this is just
fourth-day-old turkey.
Thanks, but no thanks.
