The Yankees, six and one-half games behind first-place Detroit and five games behind second-place* Toronto, have only 23 games remaining and must make a move soon to avoid elimination. Toronto faces a similar uphill battle, with 14 of its 23 games against either the Yankees or Tigers. Although the Yankees have only a 34-38 road record, they swept the Jays at Toronto the last time the clubs met in July. The first of three games at Exhibition Stadium is scheduled tonight, with Toronto starting left- hander Mike Flanagan, 4-6, against New York left-hander Ron Guidry, 5-8. ON SATURDAY, the Jays will go with Jimmy Key, 15-6, against New York's Tommy John, 12-5, in -another battle of left- landers. On Sunday, right-hander Rick Rhoden, 16-9, gets the call for New York against left-hander John Cerutti, 10-3. "I said in New York City that the Yankees aren't going to win it," Seattle Mariners manager Dick Williams said when his club was in Toronto last weekend. "Detroit and Toronto are better." What's the difference? "Talent, pitching, and better- balanced ball clubs here and in Detroit," Williams said. "It all boils down to pitching and defense because the clubs can pound the ball." Toronto manager Jimmy Williams said he would use a four- man pitching rotation the rest of the season, featuring the three lefties who will face the Yankees as well as right-hander Jim Clancy, 12-10. Leaving the rotation is Dave Steib, 13-8, who has lost three of his last four starts.
