SPORTS The Michigan Daily Friday, September 11, 1987 Page 15 Irish fightin' to regain way for the Wolverines. On top of all that, the officials ruled that an apparent Joel Williams touchdown reception, which would have given Notre Dame a 26-24 lead, was caught out of bounds, contrary to what a Michigan ballboy believed. "I thought my heart would come up all the way through my throat on that call," said Irish quarterback Steve Beuerlein after the game. "The way I saw it, Joel had his left foot in and his right foot close to the line. Michigan's ballboy was right there and told our ballboy that Williams clearly had both feet in the end zone.- THE GAME ended when Notre Dame placekicker John Carney's 45- yard field goal attempt fell short and wide left. After the game Holtz said, "I've never seen so many things go wrong on close little things in my life." Coach Bo Schembechler went on to lead Michigan to its first 11- victory season since 1971 and the Rose Bowl, while Notre Dame finshed 5-6 for the second consecutive season. The Irish's losses, like the Michigan game, were close - a five-pointer to Michigan State, a one-pointer to Pittsburgh, another five-pointer to Penn State, a two- pointer to Louisiana State. THE IRISH finished the season past glory with a 38-37 victory over Southern California on a 19-yard Carney field goal as time expired. Taking the graduation losses of Carney, Beuerlein, defensive lineman Wally Kleine, and linebacker Mike Kovaleski among others into consideration, Holtz calls his 1987 group less talented but better prepared than his '86 team. "I think our players learned what it takes to compete week in and week out against the schedule we play," Holtz said. "I hope the USC game proved to them what it takes to win the close games against the good teams." Taking the snaps from the center for the Irish will be senior Terry Andrysiak. A 6-foot-1, 184-pounder, Andrysiak started the Pittsburgh game last season and saw action in eight other games. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 233 yards on the year. AS A SOPHOMORE, the Allen Park native also played in nine games, hitting 35 of 61 passes for 542 yards. Andrysiak provides an added dimension with his scrambling ability. The senior has gained 164 yards on 52 carries in his career. Said Holtz: "He's gained a reasonable amount of experience playing the last two years, and he can both run and throw." One of Andrysiak's jobs will be to get the ball to Brown. The ABC television cameras will be glued to the Irish flanker as well as Michigan's Heisman candidate, tailback Jamie Morris. "They'll both be instrumental guys in this game," Schembechler said. "Brown of course is their big gun, and offensively the guy that makes us go is Jamie-Morris." Last season Brown ranked third in the nation in all-purpose yardage with 176.1 yards per game rushing, receiving and running back punts and kickoffs. His total included 45 receptions for 910 yards and five touchdowns and 59 carries for 254 yards and two touchdowns. The Irish will not be surprised if the Wolverines avoid kicking and punting to Brown, but both Holtz and his flanker are not concerned. "I am not really concerned about getting the ball to Tim Brown," Holtz said. "He can do several other things without the ball.
