Son Aquino

(Continued from Page 1)
year, said the military is using the
'Communist presence there as an
,excuse to criticize the Aquino
administration.
He added that the military has in
fact been conducting a successful
campaign against the Communist
forces in the provinces. The real
issue, he said, is upcoming
November elections of local and
provincial government officials who
were appqinted by Aquino.
These officials have been
competing for control of local
money-making establishments, such
s gambling houses, with military
leaders who hope to regain the power
they had under Fernidand Marcos'
rule, Hawes said.
"This is a struggle for political
controlspolitical supremacy. It is
not a struggle about the Aquino
government's failure to give the
military what it wants and not a
struggle against anti-insurgency,"
Hawes said.

Zurbrugg says he left football
team for personal reasons

(Continued from Page 1)
"I know I could have had a better
(spring)," Zurbrugg admitted. But he
said, "That didn't have anything to
do with it. I didn't step down
because I was 'third (string)'."
Zurbrugg's first taste of action as
a starter came in 1984 after a broken
arm sidelined Jim Harbaugh five
games into the season. Zurbrugg
beat out Russ Rein and started the
last five games, completing 63 of
113 passes for 691 yards on the year.
In the Purdue game he set one
Michigan record and tied another.
His 259 yards passing on 21 of 30
attempts was the most passing
yardage in Michigan history -
Harbaugh has bettered that mark four
times since then. His four
touchdown passes tied him with
Steve Smith for the current single-
game record.

In the two following campaigns
Zurbrugg only attempted a total of
21 passes and completed seven,
while Harbaugh guided the
Wolverines to 11-2 and 10-1-1
records.
Zurbrugg will complete his final
term at Michigan and graduate in
December. He hopes to go into

coaching and teaching after school,
and said he will not hesitate to turn
to coach Schembechler in the future.
"The four years were fun," he
said. "I enjoyed them a lot. I loved
being part of the team and
contributing what I did. I don't regret
them. If anything, I am happy with
them."
