The Michigan Doily Page 9 Harris Ily ADAM OCIILIS Michigan middle guard Billy Harris and Ohio State head coach Earle Bruce will be ending their careers for their respective teams this pSaturday in Michigan Stadium when Michigan and Ohio State renew their classic rivalry. And though the circumstances surrounding their diepartures are different (Harris is a fifth-year senior, Bruce is a lame-duck coach after being fired Monday), Harris thinks the reason Bruce will be coaching in his last game as a Buckeye may be the same reason that Harris will be *playing in his last game as a Wolverine. "I was overtaken by Michigan (during the recruiting trip)," said Harris hours before Bruce was dismissed from his post. "The tradition, Coach Scheinbechler, the opportunity to play for a legend. Maybe if Woody Hayes would have been there, it would have been a harder choice, but Earle Bruce and *Bo? Bo is a legend. I wanted to play ?for a legend." IfA RR IS need not say the obvious: Bruce is, was, and probably happy in end i"-NAdamantly Speaking ~ BY ADAM OCHIS *41I e3 i 4 won't ever be a legend. "But he's a come-on coach," Harris said. "Earle's coiming on." Just where Earle's coming is still uncertain - almost as uncertain as Harris' future as at Wolverine at the start of practice this year. Harris was almost as unwanted at Michigan as Bruce is at Ohio State. A disagreement with Schecmbechler over personal matters led to a one- on-one meeting between player and coach last summer. Harris refuses to disclose the nature of the problem, but Schembechler purposely left Harris out of the Michigan media guide, running rumors rampant that Harris had been dismissed from the team. The players deny the tough, stern, and dictator-like image of the legendary head coach that the public perceives. But that image became reality for the native of Xenia, Ohio. To this day. Harris believes he was right and his coach was wrong. He doesn't regret what he d id(, whatever he did, and said he would go into Schembechler's office today and say the same things he said that summer sday. DOES HARRIS feel ani- mosity toward his coach? Hatred? Dislike? Just a little? Does he regret his decision to attend Michigan rather than Ohio State, his state school - a decision which he still gets "ragged abo~ut?" "You see Bo and you know he's the man," Harris said, obviously discounting any negative feelings towards the 19-year head coach. "Anytime, anywhere, he's the man and that's the way he carries himself and that's just impressive. He is in control wherever he goes and it makes you feel good to have a coach like that." As for his decision, Harris squelches all theories that the negatives have outweighed the, positives in coming to Michigan. "It's been a great five years here," said the aspiring sports broadcaster. "It's something I'll remember for the rest of my life. It's been wonderful and I loved it and I wish I could do it all over again." BUT HARRIS can't do it all over again, andl Saturday's game will be his last in Michigan Stadium. Whereas Bruce will leave the field involuntarily, Harris realizes it is Doily Photo by JOHN IMUNSON a Wolverine on Saturday against Ohio State. 'You see Bo and you know he's the man.
