The Michigan Daily-Friday, September 11, 1987- Page 13 Records New Order Substance QWest Substance. That's the title New Order's newest release, a double LP version of the band's "greatest hits." If the sound of sleek synthesizers and driving drum machines is your style you'll most likely think that Substance, well, has substance. But long time followers may be left wondering if such a compilation is really necessary. anything new and original besides "True Faith." New Order does provide us with new versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion" but the remakes fail to fill the listener's craving for fresh vinyl. "Tempt- ation," with its overly energized vocals falls flat and short of the original classic. "Confusion," on the other hand, can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a glossy, disco-filled dance monster like the earlier version or a more harsh, less produced cut with an edge. same purpose - an all out plunge into the pool of mainstream commercialism in the States. One has to wonder if Substance is nothing more than a clever marketing scheme, allowing trendy bandwagon jumpers to gobble up all the New Order goodies with one purchase and to lure the pocket books of curious, loyal fans with sloppy remakes. And hey, why not pick up Substance on compact disc with all the obscure B sides? I think I hear Ian Curtis rolling in his grave. -Brian Bonet The dB's The Sound of Music R.E.M. Document I.R.S. Records Just in time for the new school year, here's two new LPs by two of the most influential pop bands of the '80s. And, just as the dual release of these albums is no mere coincidence on the part of a collegiate-minded I.R.S. Records, it should come as no surprise that these two records are both up to par. What is surprising is just how good they both are. After a somewhat extended hiatus and questionable "breakups," the dB's are back in full throttle with an LP that was well worth the long wait. In the continued absence of one-time band member Chris Stamey (who dB's fans were pondering the return of when I.R.S. announced the arrival of this new record), the band leans more and more toward guitarist/songwriter Peter Holsapple's rootsy, folk rock yearnings. Holsapple, who has also gone the Peter Case solo route, guitar in hand, has penned every tune on Sound of Music and there's not a weak one among 'em. In fact, the record is so good that it paints bright circles around the weaker moments of 1983's Like This, a devastating record in its own right. With an impressive line-up of guest musicians and an eclectic array of additional instruments, the dB's See RECORDS, Page 14 AUDITIO NS FOR CHORAL UNION Join in a holiday tradition: Sing with the University Musical Society CHORAL UNION in its annual performances of Handel's MESSIAH, December 4, 5 & 6.
