I say sailing. And you sa'y: Vacations o n Nantucket. Lazy summer afternoons. Parties on the beach. Drinking Heineken. Hanging out at the yacht club. I say sailors. And you say: Patagonia jackets.; Bright primary colors. Cotton sweaters. Sunglasses with gold metal frames. Little whale belts. And L.L. Bean anything. I say: University of Michigan Sailing Team. And you say: Huh? THE UNIVERSITY'S S Sailing Team hates this game. "People have a really strange; perspective of sailing," admits team captain Morgan Collins . "They; don't think of it as a sport. They, don't think of it as a game. They have the wrong image of us. And; Rent a Car from' Econo- Car We rent to' 19 YR.OLD STUDENTS! Choose from small economical cars to vans. Huron 761-8845 ANN ARBOR M sail1ors lower boom on myths then if they don't, they probably don't know we exist." For the co-ed sailing team - now ranked ninth in the nation among all its collegiate competitors - this season's biggest challenge may be the fight against the sport's Preppy Handbook-Dennis-Conner- wealthy yacht-club-member image. They are out to change that image. And they are out to fight the myths. Myth: Sailing team members must have extensive experience, namely, have sailed at Daddy's club since they were three. TRUTH: Of the sailing team's approximately 50 members, only one-third had prior experience before joining, said Collins. "We can take anyone on campus and have them crewing (one of two sailing positions) in two weeks," he said. Myth: Sailing isn't a team sport. Truth: Though regattas (competitions) usually consist of many individual races - with two sailors in each boat - it's the total score that counts. At last weekend's Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association championship qualifying regatta, over fourteen races (with different sailors each race) were used to determine the final outcome: Michigan in first place, Michigan State in second, and Notre Dame in third. MYTH: Compared to football, sailing isn't important. Truth: That all depends on your perspective. Sailing team members are fond of comparing themselves to football - which in the Ivy League, they point out, is about as important as sailing is at Michigan. "But hey, we're better than the football team," said team member Jeff Snell. "We're the only top ten team this University has," he added. Myth: Sailing is a time for relaxation. Truth: For sailing team members, sailing means three afternoons a week of practice at Base Line Lake in Dexter. It often means two or three full weekends per month spent at out-of-town regattas, such as tomorrow's National Sloop Championships in Connecticut. It rarely means time for relaxation. Myth: Sailors like to party. A lot. Truth: Sailors like to party. A lot. They use the cliche "work hard and party hard," more than most students at the University do. Sailing team social chair (yes, they have a social chair) Phil Keil takes his job very seriously. "I have to plan good parties," he said. "It's important to keep people happy." Snell is more descriptive. "We have awesome bashes!" he said. "First we sail. That's work. Then we order the kegs and have a blow-out-blast of fun." riIy Photo by JOHN MUNSON Laura Gregory and Chris Carroll helped the sailing team drift into first place in last weekend's Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association championship qualifying regatta. Orange Bowl fails in attempt to assure title game AkATARIS COMMODORE IBM COMPATIBLE " Hardware e Software . Supplies . Service STATE STE 663-0090 334 1/2 So. State St. Ann Arbor, Mi. MIAMI (AP) - The Orange Bowl's quest for the mythical national championship game suffered a severe setback with the Cotton Bowl's rejection of a contingency plan involving third-ranked Miami and seventh-ranked Notre Dame. The Orange Bowl, already guaranteed the Big Eight champion, wanted to have the Fighting Irish if they won their final three games, including a Nov. 28 match at Miami, but would take the Hurricanes if they won thier remaining games. The Cotton Bowl would have received the Hurricaines if they lost in the proposed deal, but bowl officials balked at the plan - fearing a rematch of Miami's earlier 51-7 rout of Arkansas. "We don't want a rematch, and if I was Arkansas, I wouldn't want any more of that," said Fred Scovell, chairman of the Cotton Bowl selection committee. "That game was a massacre." The Razorbacks are in contention for the Southwest Conference championship, which automatically receives the Cotton Bowl bid. It appears likely the Orange Bowl will still have a good shot at the national championship game, so long as their choice does not lose after the Nov. 21 bowl selection day.
