0 Page 8 -The Michigan Daily-Friday, November 13, 1987 Java and Jazz to expose Detroit talent By Brian Bonet and Marc S. Taras Even in a University town, it is not often that one has the opportunity to find real American culture and entertainment at the same time. It is even more rare when the experience is comrpletely free. Well, leave it to Eclipse Jazz to bring forth the rare and the delightful. Once a month on Sundays, beginning this Sunday at 5 p.m., Eclipse will be sponsoring Java and Jazz. Real American culture in a coffeehouse setting. It all takes place in the Tap Room on the ground floor of the Michigan Union, next to the Mug restaurant area. The artists in attendance will generally be invited to Ann Arbor from the pool of world class players residing in the Detroit area. Sunday's performers will be the Darryl Duncan Quartet, including Darryl Duncan on trumpet, James Carter on saxophone, Rodney Whittaker on bass, and Lawerence Williams on drums. "We are people of the new breed; of the new forefront that is jazz in Detroit," says headman Duncan. "We are the young, current musicians in Detroit that are known other places outside of the area." Duncan has played with such jazz notables as Dizzy Gillespie, guitarist George Benson, Woody Shaw, scat singer Betty "Bebop" Carter, and Joe Williams. In addition, "Quartet" saxophonist Carter has toured with Wynton Marsalis and was offered the opportunity to tour with Betty Carter. Hence, we all have a special op- portunity to see some great players throw down some great jazz right in our back yard. To say that there are dozens, even hundreds of Detroiters who deserve wider exposure is to belabor the obvious. This oppor- tunity to "expose" the current Detroit sound is the main reason why Duncan decided to take the engagement "I want to see the music exposed to the public," says Duncan. "Not just jazz, any kind of art music - music that makes you think." Duncan describes the Detroit jazz scene as "striving off of its past laurels instead of supporting its musicians of today." "New York is the mecca for a young person in a field that thrives on creative energies," Duncan says. "At one time Detroit musicians made up the bulk of the New York jazz scene with people like Tommy Flanagan, Roy Brooks, Paul Chambers... "I want to see Detroit acknowledge what it has now. The key to it is the people's awareness." Whenever possible, workshops will be scheduled prior to the performance for a more intimate learning atmosphere. The Darryl Duncan Workshop is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Upcoming concerts in the Java and Jazz series will tentatively include the Doc Holladay Trio, Hubie Crawford, and Ken Kellett. What more could we want to unwind before another week of work and school. Real American culture, entertainment, good music, the right company - it all adds up to big fun. And it's free! THE DARYL DUNCAN QUARTET will perform two sets of live jazz between S p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Tap Room located on the Michigan Union ground floor. A workshop will preceed the concert at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. 4 4 The Darryl Duncan Quartet features some of Detroit's premiere jazz artists. They will be kicking off Eclipse's Java and Jazz this Sunday in the Michigan Union's Tap Room. a Records Suicidal Tendencies Join the Army Caroline Records A 1983 poll by the fanzine Flipside found Suicidal Tendencies .. T-SHIRT PRINTING HIGH QUALITY LOW PRICES SINCE 1973 to be the winner in the best band, best new band, and best album of 1983 categories. The poll of "a couple hundred" Flipside's readers also found the Sex Pistols were winners of "best all-time record" for jZ. -I Never Mind the Bullocks. Suicidal Tendencies earned mention along- side Black Flag and Minor Threat. 37% said they skateboard; 43% said they were in a band; 66% lived at home, and 40% said they were anarchists. Suicidal Tendencies was the favorite active band of this very select niche. It is disappointing, therefore, that Join the Army is a good album - as far as heavy- metal goes. That is not to say that Join the Army is not fast-paced at points or that the lyrics are the typically idiotic and sexist lyrics of heavy- metal. Rather, at the boundary of thrash and heavy-metal, the songs on this album consistently fall on the heavy-metal side in their repetitive nature, and mostly met- aloid voices and guitar-playing. Suicidal Tendencies' lyrics range from tame and meaningless ("Love me, hold me tonight") to mostly nihilistic ("He's back the Suicidal Maniac," "War inside my head," "cyco, cyco, cyco, cyco," and "Suicidal Rock, Join the Army!"). The title track's lyrics call on the audience to take up their brand of "Hardcore, Metal, the New Wave." Heavy-metal fans might enjoy Join the Army. It is a disciplined, hard-hitting album that is some- thing of a venture outside mainstream heavy-metal. -henry Park Zoetrope Life of Crime Combat Core Other than the fact that the front cover is cool, not much can be said for Zoetrope's new album. It's really too weak to be considered anything but wimp noise, and that's the last thing that should be expected from a metal band. The cover claims the band to be "Hardcore Street Metal," b'ut once the vinyl is spinning, there's the sad realization that this is neither hardcore nor metal. The guitars are fast, but far too weak to put them into the catagory of a "hard rock" band. Even the drums don't keep up with the classification the boys have given themselves. It's more like wimp metal than anything else. Unfortunately, the lyrics and vocals are what's lacking lack more than anything else on the LP. I don't usually expect heavy metal to have intelligent lyrics (except for Motorhead), but these are horrible. For example, "Seeking Asylum," probably the album's best song, contains lyrics such as "Bodyguards become your scene/Limousines and fashion queens," and "Seeking asylum - from the DEA." Zoetrope's vocalist certainly doesn't help these poor lyrics. He has an.extremely predictable style, and his voice just makes matters worst. It's about three octaves higher than any other human's on the planet and he becomes outright annoying after the first ten minutes of music. It makes one wonder if Zoetrope didn't just write some of these songs so they could fill a whole LP. -Robert Flaggert HI-Fl STUDIO ANN ARBOR RADIO& TV TAPE RECORDER SERVICES The place to go for Audio - TV Service & Rentals Hundreds of stereo & TVcononents used and reconditioned Phono Stylii - Woofers, Tweeters, Etc.
