The two, along with the rest of the Wolverines, talked about the upcoming season at yesterday's Michigan Basketball Press Day. "I don't want your expectations to be too high. You have to look at this objectively," said Frieder. He downplayed other's lofty predictions for the team, especially criticizing ABC and ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale. Vitale has made Michigan his preseason No. 1 pick. "One guy (Vitale) has been spouting off about us the most," said Frieder. "Most people in the Midwest have picked us third, fourth, or fifth in the conference. I think that's fairly accurate." FRIEDER questioned how Vitale could pick the Wolverines over more veteran Big Ten squads. "A guy like Vitale will say Indiana won the championship last year, but they lost Alford. Well, hell, we lost (Antoine) Joubert and (Garde) Thompson, and we only finished in fifth place." That, apparently, doesn't faze Grant. "I feel we can win the Big Ten championship if players work hard and play well on the road," said Grant. "If everybody develops and plays their role, we can get to the final four (of the NCAA Tourna- ment). And if we get to the final four, I think we'll win it." Grant added, "This team's got the personnel to be No. 1 in the country when it's all over. So why not pick us No. 1 now?" Frieder had more than a few reasons as to why not. "We've had a lot of inconsisten- cies and a lot of injuries," said Frieder about his team, which has been practicing together since October 15, the first day the NCAA allows organized practices. "(The players) have been going down like flies, it seems," said Frieder. THOUGH NONE of the Wolverines have been beset with major injuries, Frieder said nagging inuries have made it hard to have full-squad practices. In addition to injuries, Frieder worried aloud about his team's youth, inexperience, and weak inside play. He also lamented about how the losses of Joubert and Thompson have left the Wolverines with only one experienced guard Frieder showcased sophomores Terry Mills and Rumeal Robinson at the luncheon, both of whom sat out last season as a result of not scoring highly enough on their college entrance exams as required by the NCAA. Mills and Robinson both said they have not lost anything on the basketball court after sitting out a year and were unwilling to criticize the NCAA's Proposition 48. "I don't think (Proposition 48) is not fair just because I didn't pass it," said Mills. "I think it's good. I'm not going to bad-mouth the NCAA just because I didn't pass it." Frieder added he thought Mills' and Robinson's sitting out a year "got them into a routine and taught them a little discipline." Grant, Hughes star in Blue wins By GREG MOLZON Special to the Daily CLARKSTON - Michigan head coach Bill Frieder has said over and over this preseason, if the basketball team is nothing else this year, it will be exciting. The Wolverines were just that last night in an intrasquad scrimmage at Clarkston High School. The Blue Team, led by most of the probable starters, won both halves of the scrimmage. Mark Hughes scored 12 points and Glen Rice 10 in the first half to lead the Blue to a 47-21 blowout. "In the first half I thought the Blue team did a good job running the offense," Frieder said. "I think we've improved from Sunday's scrimmage, I think we're at the point we should be right now with six new players." Although both halves were sloppy and practically void of outside shooting, the second half featured the Wolverine running game and dunking abilities. THE BLUE won the second half, 46-39, behind nine dunks and Gary Grant's 12 points, Loy Vaught's 11 (four dunks), and Rumeal Robinson's eight (three dunks). Robinson, who missed last season due to proposition 48, stole the show with his trio of spectacular dunks, including a one-handed slam of an alley-oop pass from Grant. The game ended in bizarre fashion as a Mike Griffin jumper bounced off the rim and got stuck on top of the backboard. The game was then called with five seconds remaining. After the game, Frieder talked about the competition for starting positions. "I don't know if they're competing enough," said the eighth-year coach. "We've got them guessing what the lineup is but really I don't know myself." FRIEDER SAID that Rice, Grant, and Terry Mills, who was impressive around the lane in the scrimmage, would start. That leaves Griffin and Robinson fighting for the other guard spot and Hughes and Vaught battling up front.. Newcomer, Sean Higgins was a bit erratical but was impressive with some fancy passing and creative dunks during the game and.warmups. The Wolverines next scrimmage is Wednesday at Crisler Arena, with the newcomers going against the veterans.
