Michigan's casualty list keeps growing. Wolverine football coach Bo Schembechler ran down the roster of the wounded at his weekly football luncheon yesterday. The latest additions raised the injured total to 21, according to the 19th-year head coach. The key loss sustained in Michigan's 30-20 win over Minnesota last Saturday was cornerback David Arnold. The junior went down on the first play from scrimmage with a muscular injury to his right ankle. '"I was thinking, 'What the hell is this game going to be like if my best defensive back goes down on the first play?'" Schembechler said. ARNOLD was expected to be released from University of Michigan hospital yesterday. Schembechler saidthat if the sWelling did not go down, an operation may be necessary. Arnold is not expected to return to action again this season. After the first play, it did not get easier for Schembechler. "That was the.hardest game I ever coached," he said. "I had seven guys vomiting on the sideline. Talk about a decimated team... and you should have seen my quarterback." Redshirt sophomore quarterback Demetrius Brown started the game with a broken thumb in his left (throwing) hand. He also suffered a dislocated right thumb during the 'game "It was grotesque," Schembechler said of Brown's right thumb. "I looked at that thing and said, nahh..." THINKING his starter was done for the game, Schembechler replaced him with hobbled backup QB Michael Taylor, who was nursing a deep left thigh bruise. "But after one play, that little sucker (Brown) says he's ready to go back," the coach said. "I give him credit. That's one tough kid. He's a feisty little devil." Also bedeviled by injury is fullback Jarrod Bunch, who participated in just four plays against the Golden Gophers. Bunch has shoulder and neck injuries and is listed as "limited" for this Saturday's game at Illinois. Leroy Hoard, Bunch's replacement, was impressive in his Wolverine debut. His first Michigan carry, however, ended in a fumble. "The first time he carried the ball I knew damn well it was going to the carpet," said Schembechler. Hoard ran 14 times for 77 yards after sitting out the first eight games of the year to concentrate on academics. Dean Dingman, a rookie offensive lineman, sustained ankle and neck ailments. Linebacker Keith Cooper, the Wolverines' defensive champion of the Minnesota game, has a leg injury. Cooper and Dingman are questionable for Saturday. Receiver John Kolesar remains sidelined indefinitely due to mononucleosis. Coming out with a win despite all the injuries was especially pleasing to Schembechler. "When you are in this position and you win the game, it really means something," he said. "And to do it on the road - that's pretty meaningful to us. We think we're pretty good now. That may not be true, though." Blue Banter - Michigan strong corner Allen Bishop won UPI's Midwest Defensive Player of the Week. Bishop recorded 17 tackles and recovered a fumble in the Wolverine end zone against the Gophers. - The Wolverines champions of the week, in addition to Cooper, were: Brown, offensive champion; Greg McMurtry, offensive hustler; Bobby Abrams, defensive hustler; Carlitos Bostic, special team champion; Don Lessner, scout team champion; Brian Townsend and Wilbur Odom, rookie team champions. " Schembechler favors Michigan State in this week's showdown with Indiana for the Rose Bowl. "In my judgment, the edge goes to the Michigan State defense," he said. I Reception & Discussion with DR. Stickers finish season; Collins looks to future By GARY RESCH The Michigan field hockey team closed out its season with a 2-1 victory over Ohio State on Saturday, and a 4-0 loss to Iowa on Sunday. The weekend split brought the team's final record to 2-5-3 in the Big Ten and 11-6-3 overall. In Columbus, Wolverine senior Trish Mondul took a 'pass from Sharon Cantor at the top of the circle and drilled in the winning goal with time running out in the final period. The victory avenged la s t weekend's loss to the Buckeyes. "Our concentration was to play them good and solid with a healthy team, something we didn't have last week," said fourth-year coach Karen Collins. Mondul's goal gave the team only its second conference win this season. Despite the poor record, Collins complimented the play of co-captain Mondul. "We don't have a Most Valuable Player, but Trish was a dominating player all season," said Collins. The Wolverines had a tougher time in Iowa City even though the Hawkeyes had already clinched the conference title. "We were hoping to catch them emotionally down, but they weren't," Collins said. "Iowa is peaking going into the regionals." After the game, the Michigan field hockey team refused to be disappointed in defeat. Rather than showing remorse, the team emitted an aura of optimism. The Wolverines are a young team and are enthusiastically waiting for winter practice. With 15 of 19 players returning next year, Collins hopes maturity will enable the team to develop into a conference contender. "You could feel it on the bus," Collins observed. "The girls are already talking about next year." Wed., Nov.11 Thurs.- Sun.
