But if they have talent, they can chip away the flaws and complete a successful design - much like the Michigan hockey team this weekend in Big Rapids. The Wolverines fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs Friday night, 3-1, but learned from their past failures and on Saturday crushed Ferris, 8-4, by chiselling away some of their early-season woes. In the first nine games of the season, Michigan had problems with mental and defensive lapses, especially in the third period. These lapses either resulted in lack of productivity or the loss of a lead. SATURDAY, however, the Wolverines mounted an early 4-1 lead in the first period and added to that advantage three times in the second and once in the third. In addition, the Michigan defense shut out Ferris in the final frame, preserving an 8-4 victory. THE WOLVERINES and Bulldogs played evenly in the second period as each team scored three goals. Ferris' star recruit John dePourcq led the Bulldog's attack with the first two goals but then Wolverines Joe Lockwood and Ryan Pardoski countered to bring Michigan's advantage back to three. The shooting gallery ended in the third as Lockwood added the only tally. Wolverine goalie Warren Sharples registered 22 saves on the night before Glen Neary took over in relief. "We played five-and-one-half periods of good hockey this weekend," said Berenson. "I think the team is realizing what they have to do in the third period." -Friday night, Michigan's shooting was not as accurate. The Wolverines had 70 shots on goal with only 38 on target and only one goal to show for it. "We did everything we wanted to but put the puck in the net," said Berenson. Ourthree-yearand two-year scholarships won't make college easier. Neary ... all-star reliever "In the third period in the past, everyone thought defense," said Michigan center Rob Brown. "Everyone thought that when we had a two-goal lead we could sit back and play defense. But tonight we really pushed them." Alex Roberts, Todd Copeland, and Todd Brost each tallied in the opening four minutes, epitomizing Michigan's intense desire to come home with a split. The Wolverines got two of the goals off rebounds, something they have not been able to do in the past. "I knew it would be important for us to come out and score early," said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. "We shot smart tonight. (Friday) we shot at the net,.tonight we shot along the ice. It was a matter of getting our shots low and when we did we had a chance to rebound." THE BULLDOGS and Wolverines entered the series with the worst goals-against records in the league, but after two periods the score was only 1-1. With only one minute gone in the last period, dePourcq fired past Neary - who was in goal for the first time this season - to give Ferris the lead and trigger Michigan's breakdown. The Bulldogs scored once more, while the Michigan offense was stymied. "We played as well in the first two periods as we have all year," said Berenson. "I thought we were the better team. We just didn't put our chances in during the third period." Neary collected 21 saves on the night. His three-goals-against was equal to the lowest allowed by Michigan this year. Sharples allowed three goals at Ohio State and Miami of Ohio. JUSt easier to pay for. Even if you didn't start college on a scholarship, you could finish on one.
