Robinson, the Spurs' No. 1 draft choice, still has a two-year commitment in the Navy, but the team is eagerly awaiting his help for the future. Spurs chairman Angelo Drossos said Robinson's signing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today in t h e Convention Center Arena, and will be open to the public. "It's all just falling into place," said Drossos, who has been talking with Robinson and his agent for the past 10 days. COACH BOB Weiss said he spoke with Robinson in September when the 7-foot-1 All-American and his family received a red-carpet tour of the city. Robinson, The Associated Press' College Player of the year last season, had not committed to the NBA team, but Weiss thought Robinson could be signed. "When he did leave, I felt he was open-minded and if he was open- minded I knew Angelo could get it done," Weiss said. "Some people could have come here and it didn't matter what you did you couldn't sign them." The first news of Robinson agreeing to sign with the Spurs came from the San Antonio Express- News, which quoted Robinson's best friend and former Navy roommate, Carl Liebert. "DAVID called me tonight and told me he will be wearing the black and silver of the Spurs," Liebert said. "David told me, 'They have done everything to make me happy. How can I turn down a situation like that?"' Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but Robinson was described as being pleased. "He said he will be paid what he asked for," Liebert said. "David said, 'They have been honest and fair with me and' I can't turn (the contract) down.' "It must be all right, but it was not only the contract he was happy about," Liebert told the newspaper. "He was positive about the whole situation." The Spurs are coming off their worst season at 24-58 and see Robinson adding to their current stock of young players. "WE'RE NOT just going to sit and wait. Our goal is to make the playoffs and hopefully not by the skin of our teeth," Weiss said. Weiss said it may take Robinson two years before he reaches his potential. "We got a lot of people for their own reasons who have reasons to compete," Weiss said. "We want to develop players so when David Robinson gets here I don't want him to be the only player." At Navy, Robinson set 33 school records, including 2,669 career points, 1,314 rebounds and 516 blocked shots. The non-scoring, all-relay meet will inaugurate Northwestern's new 50 meter facility, and will feature teams from Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and h o s t Northwestern.. The purpose of the meet, as put by third year women's head coach Jim Richardson, is "to see what we have in a low pressure environment. "We will swim some relays that we normally don't in the regular season," he continued, "and we will come out of the meet with some indication of our depth in each stroke." Added sixth year men's head coach Jon Urbanchek, who directed the Wolverines to a 6th place finish at the NCAAs last spring: "We can concentrate on swimming fast without worrying about a team score. The times will tell us where we are in terms of training at this point of the season." Richardson expects distance freestyler Gwen DeMatt to excel at the meet. DeMatt, now a sophomore, helped lead last year's squad to a 10th place N C A A finish. All-American Susie Rabiah heads the Wolverine sprint relay teams and Molly Hegarty should be a force in butterfly events. Candice Quinn and Ann Colloton lead Michigan's heavily favored breaststroke contingent. Due to the graduation of last year's co-captain All-Americans Joe Parker and Dave Kerska,' sophomore Brent Lang will be called upon to anchor the sprint freestyle races. Urbanchek anticipates excellent performances by 1987 NCAA finalist Marty Moran (butterfly), junior Alex Alvizuri (backstroke), and rookie Scott Ryan (distance free). Additionally, he expects co- captain Jan-Eric Olsen and Mike Barrowman to win the breaststroke relays in the conference's most competitive stroke. This weekend's meet will be used as a tune-up for important meets in early December, when the women will travel to Indianapolis to compete in the three-day Indiana Invitational, while the men compete in the two-day Eastern Michigan, University Invitational. 4 TICKET CENTRAL Work Study employees needed to sell tickets at all UAC events $4.50 an hour 10-12 hours a week UAC/Musket presents HAIR IM AT THE POWER CENTER NOVEMBER 5, 6,7 AT 8PM Tickets Avaiable at the Michigan Union' For more info cal7e3-~107 and aN TicketMe ' .
