Both teams are in the thick of the Central Collegiate H o c k e y Association race despite having the worst goals against records in the league. Michigan has surrendered 42 goals and the Bulldogs 44 in eight games. Michigan, 4-4, stands in fourth place in the conference, three points behind first-place Michigan State. Ferris State, 3-5, is in a three-way tie for fifth, two points behind the Wolverines. THE WOLVERINES demon- strated their defensive woes last Saturday against Illinois-Chicago when they allowed the Flames to battle back from a three-goal deficit in the third period. Eventually Michigan pulled out an 8-7 overtime victory and a series split. Ferris State also allowed seven goals last Saturday in an 8-7 overtime victory over Lake Superior State at Sault Ste. Marie. It was the Lakers first loss of the season. Despite those victories, both teams were viciously attacked at the net. Wolverine goalie Warren Sharples has been forced to make a league-leading 245 saves and Bulldog goalies Mike Williams and Marc Felicio have combined to make 215 saves. Ferris State coach John Perpich blames youth for his team's inconsistent defense. The Bulldogs coach relies heavily on seven sophomores and has used seven of his new recruits extensively this lapses and breakdowns," said Perpich. "That could be a key factor in this series." Perpich said he will try to cut down on the mistakes by keeping his seven recruits out of pressure situations. Michigan plays 10 sophomores and five players who are in their first year. The series will also feature Michigan's speed versus Ferris State's size. The Bulldogs recruits include seven players over six feet tall and three over 6-4. "We are bigger and stronger this year and we can skate better," said Perpich. "We are going to play with an aggressive style." Michigan assistant coach Larry Pedrie feels that newfound bulk might create a disadvantage for the Bulldogs. "THEIR RECRUITING priority was for guys six feet, 185 pounds," he said. "But a lot of times when you get bigger, you get slower. Hopefully we'll find that and use it to our advantage." Michigan boasts threatening speed, especially up front with centers Todd Brost and Rob Brown, and wingers Ryan Pardoski and Joe Lockwood. "He can really finish," said Pedrie. "He's not a good skater but when he gets the puck around the net he knows what to do with it." Although the Wolverines will not have the support of the Ann Arbor fans, Pedrie believes the away series can work to Michigan's advantage. The Bulldogs will look to senior "When you go on the road your Darm Fridgen (7 goals, 6 assists) team is forced to be together before and newcomer John dePourcq (4, 6) the game," he said. "That gets the for offensive production. Fridgen team ready to play as one unit ranks third in the league in scoring. early." season.
