Page 8 -The Michigan Daily-Friday, November 6, 1987q Purim and Moreira play warm soundsfrom Brazil1 By Marc S. Taras Maybe if we all cross our fingers, click our heels three times, and repeat, "There's no place like Ann Arbor! There's no place like Ann Arbor!" then everything will be alright. After last Saturday's cancellation by Keith Jarrett, jazz fans and concert promoters are hopeful that malingering Halloween spooks linger no more. Tomorrow night in two shows (8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.) at the Ark Eclipse is presenting red hot Brazilian jazz from vocalist Flora Purim and percussionist Airto Moreira. For at least one night, summer in Rio will replace Michigan's November chill. Flora Purim was born in Rio DeJaneiro in 1942. She came to the United States in 1967 and studied at California State, Long Beach. In 1972, she married Airto Moreira. Purim is possessed of a remarkable voice with a six octave range. She can sing a ballad in her native Portuguese in a whispy, sensual soprano, or roar out a funk and fusion piece in street-English. She will offer wordless vocalise that reflects the sounds of animals and nature. The tiger growling in the veldt... Ahh... the gulls soaring above the beach, calling to the surf... Flora Purim has recorded witt Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, McCoy Tyner, Carlos Santana, and many others. Her repertoire includes jazz standards, Brazilian traditional works, and Latin fusion. And of course, the organic rhythmic charge provided by Airto Moreira. Airto (pronounced "eye-ear-toe"; Moreira was born in Curitiba, Brazil in 1941. He is a self-taught percussionist and drummer who has been performing since he was 12. He has been credited with single handedly revitalizing the role of percussionists in modern music. Using both hands and feet, he has contributed to the music of Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, 4\ FALL 1987 e (' at the TIC~tS 8e onsalmichigan union kets aticket office tWeather Report, Paul Simon, and 1other stars. His discography is enormous, as is his variety of sound. Airto Moreira is concerned with natural sounds. His rhythms are the organic rhythms of life. He plays an Iexotic array of traditional percussion instruments. Moreira is a master of lthe Berimbau, a one-stringed bowed instrument which uses a gourd as a tresonator. A sort of primal guitar, Fthe Berimbau is played in conjunction with caxixi (Ka-she- she), basket rattles woven from dried }seaweed. tMoreira is also an astonishing tand powerful performer on trap drums. It will be exciting to see what kind of set-up he brings to the Ark. He is sure to get your heart Ebeating and your body bouncing. "Joining Flora Purim and Airto Moreira will be guitarist Jose Neto from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Over the last ten years Neto's warm playing has been featured with Harry Belafonte, Tania Maria, and Randy Brecker. His association with Purim and Moreira dates back several years. So, if you like your jazz served sunny side up, with more Cayenne power than a bottle of Clancy's Fancy Hot Sauce, book passage to Brazil tomorrow night. You won't have to travel far. All the warmth and love of Rio will be right here in town tomorrow night at 8 and 10:30 p.m. at the Ark. Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, and Jose Neto travel with something special that they don't even have to pack. You will know when you hear them that they carry the music within them wherever they may be.
