Fullback Jarrod gives
Blue Bunch of options

By DARREN JASEY
Jarrod Bunch came to Michigan
to play tailback. But he soon found
out that a little guy named Jamie and
A lawn-mower accident he had as a
five-year old would make him better
suited to play fullback.
Bunch is the big guy in the
Michigan backfield who mostly
blocks for Jamie Morris, but re-
cently his rushing load has picked
up. He is now the starting fullback
} after sharing duties with senior Phil
Webb during the first four games of
the season.
I Despite his sophomore status,
Bunch has four years of eligibility
after being redshirted last year.
HEADING INTO this Sat-
urday's Minnesota game, Bunch has
gained 315 yards, including 180 in
the last three games. He had 55 last
Saturday against Northwestern and a
season-high 72 at Indiana two weeks
ago.
Bunch is happy as the team's
second-leading rusher, but two years
ago he wanted to be number one.
As a senior tailback at Ashtabula
(Ohio) High School in 1985, Bunch
picked Michigan over West Virginia,
North Carolina, Kentucky, and
Maryland, in hopes of becoming
head coach Bo Schembechler's main
ball carrier.
"He was a big looking physical
kid," Schembechler said of Bunch,
who now stands 6-2, and weighs 227
pounds, "As a freshman we saw he
had potential as a fullback. He
wanted to be a tailback. He had
visions..."
BUNCH had been forwarned in
high school that Michigan would
make him a fullback. "Everyone told
me they were going to do it," Bunch
said, "the other schools that recruited
me and my high school coaches.
"My coach said, 'If I go there you
know that they have Jamie Morris
and they need a blocking back.'
But Bunch, who at the age of five

In addition, Schembechler
brought in tailback prospects Allen
Jefferson, Tony Boles, and Tracy
Williams along with Bunch. And to
prepare for the graduation of full-
backs Gerald White and Bob Per-
ryman last year, Schembechler
moved Bunch to fullback.
"I'm not so sure that he wouldn't
be a big powerful tailback," Schem-
bechler said, "but we needed a
fullback so we put him in there."
At first, Bunch was upset with
the move. "I hurt my neck because I
didn't know how to block," he said.
"I had to learn how to block and get
used to not running the ball."
BUNCH was even more dis-
appointed because he felt that
Michigan had planned to switch him
to fullback while recruiting him as a
tailback. He said he didn't consider
Ohio State because he was recruited
as a tailback but was told by a
Buckeye alumnus that he would be
switched to outside linebacker.
"(Michigan) told me that I would
be a tailback," said Bunch, "and that
I would be one of the better tailbacks
that they had. After I commited, they
told me to start thinking about the
fullback spot."
Bunch has made the transition
well, though. He admitted that he
likes blocking and is more suited to
the fullback position because of the
problem with his feet.
"I'm glad now that I've made the
switch," Bunch said. "It's too rough
on your feet at tailback - all the
cuts and all the running they have to
do.
."At the first couple weeks of
practice every year I go through four
pairs of shoes because I'm not used
to it."
At fullback, where Bunch has
become an effective straight-ahead
runner, the foot he injured at age five
has become less of a pain to him
after a game and more of a pain to
Michigan's opponents.

since, was not one to give up his
dream.
"I thought I could beat (Morris)
out," Bunch said. "I knew he was
only 5-9 and..."
BUNCH soon discovered what
people in Ann Arbor found out in
1984 - that despite his 5-7 height,
Morris is tough. The senior tailback
needs 118 yards to become
Michigan's all-time leading ground
gainer and has already carried the ball
more than any other Wolverine.

Jarrod Bunch (center) is sandwiched by Northwestern's Tom Kaukialo and Michigan's John Elliott in last
Saturday's Wolverine win. Bunch has taken over the fullback duties that he used to share with Phil Webb.
