Page 8 -The Michigan Daily-Monday, November 2, 1987 R.E.M. play with a theatrical flair By Beth Fertig Theatricality always wins out. Vocalist Michael Stipe's stage antics stole the show right out from under the rest of his band when R.E.M. played Crisler Arena Thursday night. Guitarist Peter Buck and company tried so hard to be a rock and roll band, but Stipe, with his hair tied back in a bohemian ponytail and an ever (d)evolving wardrobe, looked like he'd be more at home in a dada-ist theatre troupe than a rock band. Stipe is fun, but simply put, he's a pretentious tease. With his overly dramatic gesticulations and puppet- like dancing, he created a captivating persona. His serious visage and tense movements betrayed how much he really loves the stage. He pounded his temples and waved his arms just to see if the audience would imitate him; he spun around with an absurd expression of glee as he sung "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." But during that song the band also stopped their raucous playing to let him state, "Let's talk about the KKK problem at the University of Wisconsin; Let's talk about the Persian Gulf... " Stipe's striking presence made it doubtful that many in the crowd even noticed what a great guitarist Peter Buck has become, or that the other two guy's were even there until he generously moved over to let bassist Mike Mills sing "Superman." And their road- ie/guitarist Van Buren seems to have become a fifth member by now, and is certainly talented enough to merit more attention. Buck wanted so badly to be the rock star's rock star. With his black Levi's, vest, and Keith Richards-type pounces and swipes at his guitar strings, he did make an impressive and probably even genuine attempt (although he also looks like he's been living less of the rock star's life; his hair's lost a few inches, too). His lead guitar solos were polished and exciting, but were always swiftly upstaged by Stipe. But Peter Buck had his best time all night when the band came back for an encore with Television's "See No Evil." They're known to cover loads of their (or Buck's) favorite artists, from Wire to Robyn Hitchcock, and often bring those other musicians into the forefront as their audience learns more as a result. Of course, R.E.M. are now in a position to use their popularity to tell their audience about their relatively obscure influences; Stipe spelled out P-E-R-E U-B-U for the crowd to clearly hear in the hope that ~A 4I t© Monday- Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. West Quad 2nd floor, Wedge Room Thru Nov. 6 Walk-ins accepted ENSIAN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATE PROGRAM We Invite Chemical Engineering seniors and those in Chemistry or related majors to apply to the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Chemical Engineering. Vocalist Michael Stipe: engaging they'll catch on sooner or later, and their cover of Wire's "Strange" turns angst into pop. Perhaps they're feeling the ambiguities of fame, too. "When you leave the club - I mean hall..." Stipe announced, reminding them of Crisler's regulations. Stipe and company are evidently performer or pretentious art student? enjoying their new popularity, but a* break in paths seems not too far on: the horizon. Buck and the band have: become better musicians, while, Michael Stipe's talents, on the other hand, seem destined for the theatrical' stage. r, ,r The Calendar of The University of Michigan The calendar combines meeting, lecture work- shop and conference announcements with other events happening each week on campus.
