Even if Michigan ties Indiana or Michigan State for the conference title, it still does not go to Pasedena. Northwestern has no hope for a bowl vacation, but at the start of the season, bowl talk was running rampant in Evanston. Yes, Wildcat fans consider the team's one win to date a disappointment. A 4-7 record last season, including wins over Michigan State and Illinois in the final two games, renewed interest in the Northwestern football program. It was t h e Wildcats' best campaign since 1973. INTERIM head coach Francis Peay, who stepped in for Dennis Green one week before spring practice last season, was named national Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated and subsequently was signed to a long-term contract. But this year the Wildcats have only managed to tie Northern Illinois and beat Wisconsin (0-4, 2- 5), 27-24. They have lost t o conference contenders Indiana (35- 18), Michigan State (38-0), and Minnesota (45-33), but Peay isn't looking over his shoulder. "We don't have to defend anything," the Northwestern coach said. "All I can say is that we were 0-4 in the Big Ten last year at this time, and we're 1-3 right now. "We have a long way to go toward building a good football program. I don't think it is something that happens overnight. We're not going to set any records in building a program." IT MAY take an eternity for Northwestern to build a program, but Michigan has tumbled from an wo 'U .memmam' 11-2 conference championship season to 4-3 in less than a year. The Wolverines have fared well against the likes of Long Beach State and Wisconsin but have been unable to beat the stronger opponents. "We're just a very average football team," head coach Bo Schembechler said. "We're going to have to play a good football game if we're going to beat Northwestern. I really believe that." That statement is hard to fathom considering Schembechler's past success against the Wildcats. In 19 years as Michigan's head coach, he is undefeated against them in 12 tries. The two teams last met in 1984 when Michigan won, 31-0, but Schembechler expects a closer battle. "I don't think we're in a position to blow anybody out Saturday," he Brown at said. "We just want to win." THE 'WOLVERINES have been hit hard by injuries throughout the season. Their latest casualty was quarterback Demetrius Brown, who injured his left (throwing-hand) Y thumb last week against Indiana. Junior Michael Taylor will start tomorrow with either Brown or rookie Eric Bush backing him up. Taylor, like Brown, had three years of eligibility remaining and very little game experience before the start of this season. He is considered the better runner of the two. Thus far, Taylor has completed nine of 21 passes for 133 yards and has rushed for 64 yards in five games. Northwestern will start . quarterback Mike Greenfield, who along with Minnesota's Rickey Foggie, is the elder statesmen among conference quarterbacks this year. Greenfield, a 6-2, 182-pound senior, is a two-time honorable mention all-Big Ten selection and has started 34 consecutive games. } Like Hoosier quarterback Dave Schnell, Schembechler considers him a multiple threat. "He's a big play guy," Schembechler said. "He's the type of guy that can make the big play both passing and running." IN 1987 Greenfield's strong suit has been running. He is Northwestern's second-leading ground gainer with 418 yards, and. his 4.4 yards per carry is tops among the regulars. Greenfield's 54 completions in 120 attempts (45 percent) indicates that Northwestern leans more toward ,the run under coach Peay. Two years ago, Greenfield hit on 199 of 335 Jamie Morrisv passes (60 percent) for 2,152 yards. The last time this weekend's foes faced each other was 1984. Each team dropped a Big Ten opponnent when eight game conference schedules were adopted in 1985. These matchups include: MSU at Ohio State - Cliche lovers will call this "a crucial matchup." Lorenzo White and Michigan State (4-2-1, 3-0-1) are still in control of their own destiny despite a unsettling 14-14 tie with Illinois last weekend. Illinois held White to only 67 yards and ended his streak of three straight 100-yard games. The defense is led by Percy Snow' (77 tackles) and a player well known to Demetrius Brown - safety John Miller (37 tackles, 5 interceptions.) The Buckeyes (5-1-1, 3-1), who hold a 15-8 series advantage, have not lost to Michigan State since1974. Earl Bruce's team is coming off their best all-around game of the year, thanks to first-year tailback Carlos Snow's four touchdowns in a 42-9 romp against Minnesota. The most "crucial" question-te--this "crucial" game appears to be what 'shade of black Earl Bruce's sportcoat will be. Indiana at Iowa - With a win, Iowa could set the Big Ten race blazing higher than Iranian oil platforms in the Persian Gulf. Trying to keep the match lit that sparked Indiana's (6-1, 4-0) 14-10 win over Michigan, Bill Mallory will try to stop Iowa's five consecutive series wins. All purpose player Ernie Jones leads the conference with 152 yards per game, averaging 19 yards each time he touches the ball. Iowa (5-3, 2-2) will be led by flame-throwing Chuck Hartlieb, who became the first quarterback in Hawkeye history to pass for more than 300 yards in consecutive games. Minnesota at Illinois - Minnesota (5-2, 2-2) tries to keep its slim, Big Ten hopes alive. Coming off a 14-14 tie with Michigan State, Illinois has a big reason to celebrate - homecoming. The Illini (2-4-1, 1-2-1) are credited with initi'ating the homecoming tradition back in 1910. Other than that, there's no reason to pay attention to this game.
