The Michigan Daily-Friday, October 30, 1987- Page 11 Phantom haunts Gridde picks SPIKFRS SET FOR HALLOWEEN WEEKED M' seeks to spook foes By MICHAEL SALINSKY The witching hour is nearly upon us. Ghastly creatures lurk around every corner. This weekend, at the IM Building, creatures will roam the floor of the main gym. They won't be ghosts, ghouls, and goblins but rather, Wildcats, Badgers, and Wolverines. And their domain will not be the graveyard or even the dark woods, but the volleyball court. Tonight, Northwestern's Wildcats come to town to face the Michigan volleyball squad. The Badgers of Wisconsin take on the Wolverines "tomorrow night to conclude a "Halloween weekend of Big Ten volleyball action. MICHIGAN'S play in the Big Ten has not exactly inspired fear in the rest of the conference. The Wolverines are a ghastly 2-7, tied for 3 conference record, 19-4 overall, puts them in a deadlock for second place with Purdue. THE WILDCATS expect a second-place finish to put them in the NCAA tournament. On paper, Michigan looks to be a treat for Northwestern, but the Wolverines hope to play a trick on the Wildcats with what would be a major upset. One of the teams hoping to grab second place from Northwestern is Wisconsin. The Badgers are in a four-way tie for fourth place just one game out of second and were smiling like a jack-o-lantern after bumping off Northwestern last Wednesday, three games to one. Seniors Margaret Kaminski and Tracy Tiffany lead Wisconsin with 187 and 176 kills respectively. Tiffany is also first in the Big Ten with 1.79 blocks per game. Badger head coach Steve Lowe claimed before the season that Wisconsin was an "up-and-coming program in the Big Ten." Wisconsin's drastic improvement has made Lowe look like a psychic. Its 17-6 start is its best since 1979. DESPITE ITS success, Wisconsin has exhibited werewolf- like qualities. Its record on the road is 4-6. In its own fieldhouse, the Badgers are fierce, compiling a shining 13-0 record. Michigan head coach Joyce Davis is glad to be playing at home after a hairy road ,trip last weekend. She gave some insight into Wisconsin's road woes when she talked about Michigan's frightful road trips. "We don't go in charter buses," Davis said. "The players study on the van and the coaches are driving." The Wolverines hope the long rides can do something to spook Wisconsin and Northwestern. It will take more than spooks for Michigan to win this weekend. Sophomore Karen Marshall needs to regain her early-season form. Lisa Vahi must recover from an ankle injury that made her ghost-like on the court last weekend. These ingredients, more consistent overall play and a dash of luck may create a witches brew for one Wolverine upset. To ask for two victories, even on this strangest of holidays, may be asking for too much. Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Wayne Fontes was charged with cocaine possesion and druken driving Wednesday. Fontes, who played his college football at Michigan State, told police that a phantom (in town for Halloween) drove his car into a ditch. Appartently, Fontes and the phantom were on their way to Ann Arbor to drop off their Gridde picks. Said Fontes, "I was just filling out my Gridde picks when the next thing I know is my car is in a ditch and the phantom left, dropping a vial of cocaine." At this point details are a little fuzzy, but it appears that this phantom continued onto Ann Arbor, and to the Daily building, where it sabotaged yesterday's listings for Griddes. Some of the games listed are not going to be played. (Arkansas is not playing Houston, Wyoming does not play against UTEP, and Princeton will not face Harvard.) These three games will not be included and only seventeen games will be listed for this week. The winner will be the one with the best winning percentage from the remaining games. The phantom remains in Ann Arbor and the Griddes Intellligence Agency (GIA) is currently in hot pursuit. If you have any information regarding the location of t h e phantom, please notify us immediately. Also, if you have time, bring in your Griddes picks to the Daily at 420 Maynard some time before 5 P.M. on Friday This weeks winner will receive a $10 coupon from Domino's pizza. 6. Michigan will be .loping to dismember the post- 1eason aspirations of second-place Northwestern and fourth-place Wisconsin. For Michigan, Northwestern has 'to be considered the scarier opponent. The Wolverines were embarrassed in Evanston earlier this season, scoring only four points while getting swept in three games. The Wildcats are led by junior Janine Makar. The six-foot middle blocker leads the team with 325 kills and a .;terrifying .357 attack percentage. Andrea Proos, a native of Portage, MI, will be looking to -haunt her old state. The junior setter leads the Wildcats in assists. Her 11.3 assists per game in conference play is tops in the Big Ten. Northwestern, 5-13 in the conference last season, has turned into a monster in the Big Ten. Its 6- '1 1 TANNING CENTER [ I on campus I 216 S.
