The Michigan Daily-Friday, October 30, 1987- Page 9 'Evening Aleister his due By Amy Koch The spirit of Halloween can definitely be captured in An Evening With Aleister Crowley featured this week by the Performance Network. In a combination of drama, dance, and song, Harvey Zook has adapted the short stories of occultist and magician Aleister Crowley for the stage. Providing an almost Hitchcock-esque experience, Zook has entwined comedy, mystery, and horror for a very devilish production. "The Strategem," one of the featured works, presents the audience with the situation of being stranded on a lonely train platform with a self-confessed murderer who insists on declaring his horrifying desires. Using a manipulative stage and {variousaexpressionistic techniques, Zook successfully provides goosebumps for the entire audience. Next, "The Testament of Magdalen "lair" explores the power of psychic communication within the living world and underworld. Staged on an angular black and white set, this work also features a score composed pays Crowley monors by Martin Simmons as well as a dancing chorus of demons. An Evening With Aleister Crowley is created by La!, an ensemble of actors, writers, musicians, and choreographers. Though this is their first full-length production, La! staged Scherzo for Z at the Network last January and At the Laundromat for the 25th annual Ann Arbor film festival. These works portray the early 20th century writer's infamous and off-beat perspective on religion and the occult. Moreover, these works describe Crowley's view of "a world. peopled and manipulated by demons, a world that reverberates with an eerie, almost familiar chord in La!'s presentation." The opening performance of AN EVENING WITH ALEISTER CR O WLEY is tonight at 8 p.m. .and will be followed by a Halloween dance party. Come in costume, if you like, and receive $1 off admission price. There will be another performance tomorrow night at the same time and on Sunday at 6:30 p.m., as well as November 5-8. Call the Performance Network for further details. Keith Jarrett' s Trio (Continued from Page 7) before dropping out of the music scene entirely to pursue Eastern philosophies. This led him to Japan,, where he also studied Oriental medicine. In Japan, his musical interest re-emerged and his vision matured. He recorded and performed occasionally before returning to the U.S. Peacock's interest in the relationship between Eastern and Western sciences led to studies in microbiology at Washington State University. He considers the tonal structure of music and the actual structure of matter to be the same. Peacock has continued a lifetime study of science, mysticism, and music, recording often for ECM. His compositions are beautiful and exotic. His bass playing is exceptional; hebis a musician's musician. Whew! There is so much more that could be said about these folks. But there is nothing that the music of Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Gary Peacock could not say for itself. The Standards Trio uses the language of popular song to popular song to speak directly to the heart and to heal the spirit. This Halloween we should all treat ourselves to this very special op- portunity. Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio will be performing tomorrow night at Hill auditorium.
