ARTS Friday, October 30, 1987 The Michigan Daily Page 7 Jarrett' s Standards Trio to ignite at Hill By Marc S. Taras Eclipse Jazz is offering A n n Arbor children of all ages a fine Halloween treat. In the first really big show of the season, Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio will appear tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at Hill auditorium, leaving time for spooks to celebrate before the witching hour. The Trio, which features bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, derives its name from its repertoire: popular "standards" from composers like Alec Wilder, Cole Porter, and Rodgers and Hart. Their brilliant, balanced musicianship and telepathic communication of ideas has been well documented on three releases of " Standards" on the ECM Record label and their area debut appearance is rightly generating lots of excitement. All three members of t h e Standards Trio have led groups and recording sessions of their own. They are genuine examples of the cliched notion that "a history could fill a volume." Even a capsule summary of their careers is a challenge to brevity. Pianist Keith Jarrett was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1945. He began at the keyboard at three, and was writing melodies and improvising at the age of seven. Formal studies began at 15 and scholarships to the Berklee School of Music followed. Early professional work with Roland Kirk and Art Blakey led to a long association with west coast sat CLASSIFIED ADS (Continued from Page 6) drums and hired on with John Patton in New York. He worked with John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, the giants of modern saxophone. He worked with Jarrett in the ground- breaking Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis bands. Since the '70s, DeJohnette has recorded and played on sessions too numerous to mention as well as leading his own bands and recording sessions. His group "Special Edition" has received kudos and has appeared in Ann Arbor. He is an amazing drummer and composer. Gary Peacock may be the source of the evening's biggest thrills. In such company it would take a musician of Peacock's calibre to shine so brightly. He was born in Burley, Idaho in 1935, making him the Standards Trio's "elder statesman." He started playing drums and piano, switching to bass in Germany, playing with a local group while stationed there in the army in 1954. He stayed in Germany after he was discharged and began to play professionally. Returning to Los Angeles in 1958, Peacock honed his bass chops as he worked steadily with a wildly diverse group of musicians including Paul Bley, Ravi Shankar, Don Ellis, and many others. By 1961, Peacock had become interested in the blossoming avant- garde movement. He worked with most of the seminal figures of the fire music (Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, etc.). His recordings with the visionary saxophonist Albert Ayler should be required listening for school children world wide. "Witches and Devils" has an especially appropriate seasonal vibration. Peacock went on to play Miles Davis in the middle with '60s See KEITH JARRETT Page 9 RIfl STREET mOTORS I F----l I Quality Care ForYour FineImported Automobile W OFFER Phone 663-5544 SAVINGS.. By 1969, Jarrett had formed his own group and hooked up with Miles Davis. He has since led all star American and European quartets with cats like Dewey Redman and Jan Garbarek. He has recorded over 20 albums of solo piano including the popular Koln concert. In an upcoming release Jarrett will record J.S. Bach's "Well-Tempered Klavier, Book I." Jack DeJohnette also studied piano as a youth. He switched to YOUR CHOICE, WE MAKE 'EM BOTH! ROOMMATES GREAT LOCATION, 1 or 2 rooms avail. in nice house avail now 6 mo. lease, ex nt. price.
