death of
- firefighters

MILFORD (AP) - As the probe
into the training deaths of three
volun-teer firefighters continued
yesterday, investigators' attention
focused on sever-al critical errors.
State police and Oakland County
in-vestigators said up to three times
the normal amount of fuel was used
to set the fire that trapped six
firefighters dur-ing a Sunday training

exercise.
The volunteers also apparently let
fumes from the fuel build up for as
long as two hours instead of igniting
it right away. Then they let
firefighters enter the farmhouse after
the fires were set.
Four other firefighters were
injured, and one remained
hospitalized. I

Congress look for ways to cut deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) - Pled-
ging to leave politics at the door, ne-
gotiators for Congress and the Rea-
gan administration began searching
yesterday for a mixture of tax in-
creases and spending cuts that would

reduce the federal budget deficit
enough to pacify world financial
markets.
The initial goal was the $23 bil-
lion package required by the Gramm-
Rudman balanced-budget law. House

Speaker Jim Wright, D-Texas, des-
cribed that figure as a rock-bottom
minimum but some negotiators cau-
tioned against raising expectations of
a signigicantly larger deficit reduc-
tion.
President Reagan said the volatile
financial markets are signals of po-
tential dangers for the economy.
"Anyone who doubted that these
threats to our future-growth were ser-
ious should have been set straight in
the last couple of weeks," he said in
a written statement.
