Total, accounted for 21 yards on the
winning drive, and Schnell cappea it
with a three-yard touchdown run on
an option keeper.
"They came out fired up in the
second half," Michigan defensive
tackle Mark Messner said. "We made
a couple third down mistakes which
were very costly."
Michigan safety Doug Mallory
added, "We had a hard time shutting
their offense down."
Indiana outgained the Wolverines
116 yards to 88, and 10 first downs
to six in the second half.
After hitting four-of-six passes
for 40 yards in the first half,
Michigan quarterback Demetrius
Brown completed two-of-nine for 21
yards in the second. The conference
passing leader, Schnell completed
nine-of-17 for 107 yards.
Indiana made it 7-0 midway
through the first quarter on an 11-
yard pass from Schnell to Jones. The
score came just two plays after Bill
Reisert blocked Monte Robbins'
first punt, which the Hoosiers
recovered at the Michigan 11-yard
line.
"The kicking game got us in
trouble right off the bat,"
Schembechler said. "That's been one
of our strengths, and we did a lowsy
job."
The next Michigan possession
ended when Indiana's Brian DeWitz
intercepted a pass intended for Greg
McMurtry, who had fallen down.
But, David Arnold blocked a
subsequent 44-yard field goal attempt
by Pete Stoyanovich.
The Wolverines overcame the
Memorial Stadium crowd noise to
tie the game early in the second
quarter. The touchdown came on a
perfectly timed pass from Brown to
John Kolesar in the left corner of the
end zone.
It took over five minutes to get
the TD play started, as Brown backed
away from center various times,
claiming that his signals could not
be heard above the noise of 51,240
Hoosier faithfull. The officials
obliged by warning the Indiana
bench.
The TD pass culminated a 12-
play, 77-yard drive, in which Morris
and Jarrod Bunch combined for 42
yards. Morris accumulated 104 of his
game-high 152 yards in the first
