INTERVIEW
Continued from Page 17
which would be my goal.
D: Have you ever made an effort to
get a regular liquor license?
S: No, not yet. The topic comes
up at our board meetings...I
personally am opposed to a bar but
I think you could have a club that
serves liquor and still not be a bar. I
think everyone could sit there and
have a drink and still be watching
the band. It's when everyone has
four drinks that they stop watching
the band.
The audience is incredibely
intelligent and incredibely single
minded. They're there for a
purpose-they're there to see a
show and I think we have

tremendous audiences. Performers
who play in the Ark tend to think
of it as, if not the best club in the
coiuntry, one of the best, and I
don't think that has a lot to do with
the Ark itself. It's because of Ann
Arbor. If you give an atmosphere to
people in Ann Arbor that is
conducive to receiving music, they
respond incredibely well. They're a
great audience and it doesn't matter
what kind of music it is.
D: You seem to serve an important
role as we become more and more a
bottom line culture.
S: The important thing about the
Ark is we don't try things to see if
they'll make money, we try things
to see if they're important to the
community and if they're important
to the world. That sounds like a
spacious statement but traditional
folk music is important. 0
