Page 10 -The Michigan Daily-Friday, October 23, 1987 Hoosiers armed Must-win situation for Blue and ready for M' (ConinuedfromPage 1) "They're ahead of us," Michigan offensive line coach Jerry Hanlon said. "We have to beat them. It's a big game for us." "(The game) has more meaning than the ones in the past," said Doug Mallory, who plays strong safety for Michigan and is the son of Indiana's head coach Bill Mallory. "We definitely need a big win to keep us in the race." The game starts at 2:30 EST and will not be televised. THE HOOSIERS' only loss came at Kentucky, 34-15, in the second game of the season, but they rebounded with a 20-17 win against Missouri. They then pounded Northwestern in its Big Ten opener before shocking Ohio State, 31-10, at Columbus and deflating Minnesota at the Metrodome, 18-17. The Hoosiers play at Iowa next week and at Michigan State Nov. 14. "I'm not beating a drum," Bill Mallory said. "I know we've got a long, tough season ahead. I can't say I'm surprised. I just play it a game at a time and hope to heck it fares out pretty good." The Wolverines, after losing to Michigan State, 17-il, got on the right track to the Rose Bowl last week, crushing the Hawkeyes, 31- 10. The other contenders Michigan still must face are Minnesota (2-1) and Ohio State (2-1). Despite undergoing lithotripter treatment for two kidney stones Monday, Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler will be on the sidelines. "Bo's got them really going," Mallory said. "No question about it they'll be the best team we've played thus far." IN MICHIGAN State and Iowa, Schembechler's team has faced a strong running attack and a strong passing attack, respectively. Indiana excels in both areas. "They have the ingredients of a very fine offense," Schembechler said. "They have a fine running back, a quarterback who could run and pass, a fullback who can block, an excellent receiver. They are one of the best teams in the league. I think they've proved that." Indiana is one of the few conference teams that has received consistent play from its quarterback. Redshirt sophomore Dave Schnell leads the Big Ten in passing and is ranked third nationally. The former Parade Magazine high school All- American has completed 90 of 144 passes for 1305 yards. He has thrown 10 touchdown passes and run for three others. In last Friday's victory over Minnesota, Schnell passed for 250 yards and rushed for two touchdowns. "Schnell is an extremely improved football player," Hanlon said. "He's taken command of their offense, doesn't turn the ball over, doesn't make a lot of mistakes. He has a lot of poise for a young quarterback." T H O S E other offensive "ingredients" that Schembechler spoke about include running backs Anthony Thompson, Tom Polce, and Andre Powell; and wide receiver Ernie Jones. Jones is Indiana's version of Notre Dame flanker Tim Brown. The senior is ranked first in the Big Ten in receiving and all-purpose running. He is second in kickoff returns and tied for second in scoring. He has caught 38 passes and averages 18.4 yards per catch. Thompson, a sophomore, is the fourth-leading rusher in the conference with 667 yards and an 111.2 yards per game average. Because of injuries, he didn't start last season until the team's eighth game against Wisconsin. But in that start, he rushed for a Big Ten freshman record 207 yards on 39 carries. He ended last season with 806 yards despite starting less than half of the team's games. Senior fullbacks Polce and Powell, both 6-1, 225-pounders, lead the way for Thompson. The starter, Polce, paces the team with 5.8 yards per carry. ON DEFENSE the Hoosiers are toughest at the linebacker position, where they have All- American candidate Van Waiters and Willie Bates. Waiters, a 6-4, 230- pound senior, strikes themost fear in Schembechler and offensive coordinator Gary Moeller. "There's no better player in the league than Waiters at outside linebacker," Schembechler said. "He is a truly outstanding athlete," said Moeller. "He's got great range because of his size. We know he's a dominant player and we've got to mix it up on him." Last week the Wolverine passing offense finally performed as expected. The redshirt sophomore was named Big Ten player-of-the-week for his performance. The Wolverines hope to improve on last week's 3.3 yards per rush. Indiana's win last week was sealed when Minnesota placekicker Chip Lohmiller, who booted last- play field goals that beat Indiana and Michigan in 1986, missed a 44-yard, go-ahead field goal with 1:32 left to play. Two weeks ago in Columbus, the Hoosiers thoroughly outplayed the Buckeyes. According to Mallory, Indiana needs a performance similar to the one it displayed against Ohio State to beat Michigan. "For us to be in there we have to be at our best - precision football," Mallory said. "We can't screw up much or it's going to cost us." m - m - m mm - mm mm - m - mm m - 1 COOKIES 1 1 BUY 2 COOKIES, GET 1 FREE!
